Sample Wine Bar
This is a silly little question, but here goes.
I have a date Monday at Sample on Smith St. From various sites found on google I haven't really gotten a good read on the type of place it is, other than (duh) a wine bar. So... what do I wear? Should I eat first? It looked like they don't really have much food.
I suppose it would help if I mentioned I'm a girl. :)

As others have already said, Sample is a wonderful place for a date and my favorite bar in brooklyn by a long shot. We've had dinner there when we arent hungry for something more substantial. You can easily make a meal out of the meats, cheeses, the giant white beans, the rillette, etc. They do a really nice cookie plate as well for a light dessert :)

Sample is a great date spot. There's terrific snack food, as others have mentioned, but not enough for a substantial meal. Depending on your size and tolerance, you might want to grab a small snack beforehand (there's a pizza place next store) just to guard against getting too loopy, if that's a concern. As for dress, it's totally casual.
Enjoy, it's a perfect date spot, so points for whoever picked it.

Sample is fantastic: cozy, friendly, casual. In other words, a great place for a date. The food is nice, but their angle is to serve charcuterie meats, cheeses and only things from cans. It's an idea based on a Spanish precedent called a Conserva (I may not be getting this exactly right so don't sue me). Sounds a little off-putting at first but it works really well. A nice draft beer, a glass of amontillado sherry, some wine and a plate or two of food and you'll be very happy. Enjoy.

It's a really casual place... very neighborhoody. I guess it's a wine bar, but their cocktails and sangria are pretty popular as well.
It's not a dinner spot per se, but their snacks are pretty nice. Last time I was there I shared some marinated mushrooms, artichoke hearts, cheese and hungarian ham and was pretty satisfied.
Have fun= )
