Hi, I'm visiting the San Francisco area for the first time for business and am looking for some really good fish tacos. I don't like the fried kind... looking for grilled fish.

I'm staying in Palo Alto and will be in Menlo Park and Santa Clara for work so someplace around there would be great. I do have a car, and I'm willing to travel if it's worth it.

Thanks!

My husband is a big fan of fish tacos. And, although he does preferred them fried, he also enjoys the grilled ones served at Bravo Taqueria on Woodside Road in Redwood City (not far from PA/MP).

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out Bravo Taqueria. I've been searching the 'net for info on this and found another place in Redwood City: Milagros Cantina (milagroscantina.com). Know anything about that?

The best Mexican restaurant in the area is Estrellita in Los Altos, on San Antonio just south of El Camino. It's just a few miles from Palo Alto. Sometimes they have fish tacos as a special, but I don't think it's a regular menu item there. But the southern Mexican specials are really good and there's usually a seafood option there. Fiesta del Mar in Mountain View also has a really good Mexican seafood soup, but I don't know if they have fish tacos. As mentioned above, Milagro's is eminently avoidable.

Really good fish tacos seem to be more a San Diego and southern California thing than Silicon Valley. There's a branch of Rubio's in the Valley Fair mall in San Jose, and the La Salsa chain does a pretty good job.

Are there any other types of food you'd like to try on your first visit? There are lots of good options around here even if fish tacos aren't at the top of that list.

Indian food is absolutely wonderful out here with the large Indian community. Some of the top choices include Amber India (both Mountain View and San Jose) for the high end, Southern Spice in Mountain View for mid-range, and Hyderabad House in Palo Alto and Shalimar in Sunnyvale for self-service. For vegetarian places, Madras Cafe in Sunnyvale is a modest storefront but has the most amazing dosas. Saravana Bhavan in Sunnyvale is a larger vegetarian restaurant that is also of high quality.

For the higher-end European places, try Bistro Elan in Palo Alto for French, and Flea Street Cafe in Menlo Park for Californian with lots of organic choices. For the highest-end, Manresa in Los Gatos is the destination restaurant in this area with highly creative food. Village Pub in Woodside is the other top-notch high-end choice.

We also have some nice middle eastern places around, including Kan Zeman in downtown Palo Alto and Dishdash in downtown Sunnyvale.

You should be able to Google nearly any of these places for exact locations, web sites, etc. You can find lots of them with Chowhound search too.

Enjoy!
