Welcome to PHSSPCA! (I make the opposite trip of you and your girlfriend, volunteering at L.A. city east and west valley, but also put in an appearance at Pasadena when needed.)
I recall from some of your previous reports that you like vegetarian food - or that you're vegetarian - or vegan? Anyway, my recommendations are based on that - sorry if I'm mis-remembering.
- Orean Health Express on Lake Ave. - Vegetarian and Vegan fast food - quite tasty (coming from an ominvore).
- Tibet-Nepal House - an interesting cuisine and many vegetarian options.
- Europane Bakery on Colorado - I know it was mentioned up-thread, but it's worth repeating - excellent pastries and sandwiches.
- Bulgarini Gelato in Altadena at the top of Lake Ave. - just search on the board for references, I think it's incredible.
- Chinese food - at the PHSSPCA, you're about 10-minutes from the Asian areas of the SGV, with many vegetarian options - I can't recall any restaurant names off the top of my head, but a search should yield good results.
- Fredo's Phillys - not vegetarian, but he can make the sandwiches with chicken, if you eat fowl. I know that he can / does make a vegetarian sandwich, but I've not had one.
I'll keep pondering this one for you - enjoy your time with the animals!

I have to second Shiro (1505 Mission Street) in South Pasadena. I think it's dinner only, though. I've been going there for years, and I never get tired of it. The food is Franco-Japanese, and they have the most amazing crispy catfish ever. Also, even though it's a chain, Houston's (320 S. Arroyo Pkwy) is really solid - fantastic "fall of the bone" ribs. Actually, everything is really good here including what I think is one of the best burgers in L.A. - the California Burger. Open all day. My favorite in Glendale is Far Niente (204 N. Brand Blvd.) Open all day for some excellent Italian. I love their flat crispy bread, fried calamari, pastas, pizzas, and a variety of specials.
what is your budget Adam? I'm guessing pretty cheap?
In Pasadena I recommend The Green Street Restaurant. Marston's for brunch(but not that cheap), give Pie N Burger a try. The Gourmet Cobbler Factory is a hidden gem but mostly takeout food (http://gourmetpigs.blogspot.com/2007/...). Saladang Song has a really nice outdoor seating area. Oh, and Avanti has great pizza.
For more upscale there's Celestino on Lake, Arroyo Chop House.
In Eagle Rock: Auntie Em's Kitchen, Oinkster. Maybe Blue Hen (it's good but portion is tiiiiny, which makes it expensive IMO)
In Glendale: Porto's! (you gotta at least visit once!)

Central Park is one of my favorite newish lunch/dinner spots, and walking distance from the PHS buildings - it's on Fair Oaks just a block north from Del Mar, facing the park (hence the name). One of the best bar burgers around, and the sand dabs and the flatiron steak are killer. Get the potato gratin instead of the mashed potatoes. Fries are good too. And welcome to a great Humane Society! We're active with their fund-raising group.
Almost forgot, Lucky Boy on Arroyo Parkway for a breakfast burrito.
Marston's on Walnut Avenue for awesome french toast.
Green Street Cafe for good Diane salad and zucchini bread.
My Taco-Highland Park on York Blvd between avenue 64 and Figueroa for a great potato taco and sopes.
Can you tell I'm hungry and it's past dinner time for me.
