Best Burrito Place in SF

Zucumber84 Oct 26, 2007 11:16 AM

Ok - I think this board needs to have a serious discussion about burritos. My personal favorite place is Chinos on 32nd and Balboa. Anyone want to contest this?

Wow - if your fave is Chinos....then...with all due respect you are in for a treat! I used to live in the hood (40th and Fulton) and would happily drive across town to Taqueria Cancun on 19th and Mission. In my humble opinion - Taqueria Cancun is possibly the greatest burrito in the USA. for real. A close second would be El Farolito on 24th and Mission. If you haven;t been to Cancun...go there NOW! Looking forward to hearing about your experience!

I think I have been to Taqueria Cancun - it is the one with the bright flair and picnic tables? I used to go there when I volunteered at 826 Valencia. I agree that it is very very good - but I have a special place in my heart for Chinos. Mostly because of the fact that they melt the cheese while they steam the burrito - which makes for a layer of melted goodness before you even hit the amazing Spanish rice and other food details.

You bring up a good point - which is a matter of preference - for me, a good buritto NEVER has the tortilla steamed! Gotta hit it on the griddle!

I use to live in the 'hood as well and have to agree. Chino's is "okay" and I'd stop by Chino's if I was right there and didn't feel like driving but that was pretty rare. I think I went 4 times in 13+ years. I'd rather just wait a day until I knew I'd be in the Mission.

Re: Cancun, it's one of my favs but I know others have preferences so I'll leave it at that and avoid the debate.

This board has had several dozen serious discussions about burritos in the not-so-distant past.

Also, http://burritoeater.com/ is maybe literally the best website of all time.

I'm pretty certain we've had this conversation already, as the links suggest. That said, I still vote Tacqueria Cancun then La Tacqueria for authentic... but there is a warm place in my heart for Papalote and, to be honest, that is my most visited joint.

Cancun is great, as is Papalote. El Farrolito is great when it's late, and while I like La Taqueria's tacos, I've found the burritos are...meh. That said, my favorite burrito is from El Castillito on Golden Gate (my work neighborhood, but they have 2 or 3 other locations). Nice guys, tortilla on the grill, heavy-handed with the avocado, etc. Do check out burritoeater.com.
