Hi Chowhounds, I'm trying to at least remind Mom of food she grew up with for Mother's Day... we're in the Oakland area, but I'd be willing to drive her out to the City/Peninsula and Southbay. I know a few weeks ago she went to try a Chinese/Macanese place in the City with some friends and she claims it was horrible -- trying to get the info so it will stay off my list... will update on this thread if I do. I know the food here can't compare to our visit to Macau a few years ago, but I'm hoping it will come close.

Thanks in advance!

I do not that much about food from Macau but for what it is worth Lucky Buddha in San Carlos has a chef from Macau who has make some dishes from Macau in the past. These items may or maynot on the menu but if you call him ahead they will make most anything for you.

Hope this helps.

I believe 99 Ranch in Richmond has a new Macau Cafe? Can someone confirm? I'm not sure if the food is passable with mom though.

I forgot what the name in English is, but it's called Macau Cafe in Chinese. They do have some items such as Portugese chicken that's Macau specific. But whether they'd remind mom of old Macau I am not so sure.

It's right across from 99 Ranch, in the Pacific East mall.

If you are looking for Macau style Portugese/Western food, I don't believe that exists in SF Bay Area (e.g. the fried magayao [mackeral?] fish balls).

The only Macau restaurant I know of in the city is T28 Bakery and Cafe in SF (Taraval & 28th) but it is more like a HK style western with a few Macau Chinese/Cantonese style small eats/dishes. Last time I went a year ago quality wasn't near the same, but very good value meals nonetheless. Probably won't remind your mom of anything. They are the only place I know of that serves the pork chop bun/sandwiches (jue pa bao) which are fried porkchops with a very airy flakey crunchy style french bread bun.

Lucky Buddha in San Carlos as Yimster mentioned does have a chef from Macau, but they are more Macau Chinese/Cantonese. Talk to the manager (she's Vietnamese who speaks fluent Cantonese) and you can surely do some custom ordering. Someone correct me if I am wrong but does Joy Luck Place San Mateo also have a chef or dim sum from Macau?

TheSauce's suggestion of Orchid Bowl Cafe (I think it is called Ngoh Moon Gai or Macau Street in Chinese) in the Richmond Plaza (across from 99 Ranch) should be decent if you are looking for good Macau Chinese/Cantonese. I too know very very little about good Macau food, though family members who have eaten here like this place very much.

I remember seeing a Chinese restaurant with the words "Macau" in the signage on Stevens Creek Cupertion. Will have to check out their menu sometime and see what's on it, though I doubt it is anything worth mentioning.

I'm not much of an expert on Macau food, having spent most of my two visa-renewal trips there at Casino Lisboa but T28 does have a pretty extensive menu (including some Burmese dishes). It can be found on menupages.com (menupix.com seem to be busted at the moment).

While we're making an inventory of Macau/Macanese spots, the folks at Jook N Fun on Irving are also from Macau. This is more of a snackish place, but the last time I was there, they'd added more to their dinner menu. A few plates like Portuguese chicken on the menu too. The staff are quite nice there and maybe you could talk them into cooking some special requests.

Thought of one more --- W&M Cafe in Fremont. Though this is more of a Cantonese/HK-style jook, fun and mein place, maybe if you called they might take special requests.

Thanks for everyone's help! I found out from Mom that she did indeed try the one off of Taraval a few weeks ago and hated it... but I think she's more into the Cantonese/Macanese fusion. Maybe I'll call up some of the places suggested and see if they offer what I'm looking for.

Definitely bacalao, portugese chicken, and portugese pork baked rice. I know Mom misses the famous white eel dish as well as the Gum Tsin Hai Hup (deep fried fatty pork) from Tou Tou Goi in Macau, as well as her faves from Fat Siu Lau in Macau... but some things have to wait until the next trip over there. Maybe for X-mas, a plane ticket? LOL... not enough money for that, but at least a nice meal out. Thanks!
