Anaheim Accidental Tourist

Due to a bathroom renovation and overbooked hotels, I'll be living next to Mickey for about a week or so. I've been to Buca di Beppo (not bad) but I'm really looking for healthy take-out or one of a kind old school diners for my meals.

Thinking about La Palma Chicken Pie Shop (anyone?) and would also love to find some good rotisserie chicken and turkey burgers. Anything unusual too. (cheap a plus) Thx!

  1. Zankou Chicken comes to mind. Although recent reports say that quality has slid the past few years, I was just there recently and the chicken tarna is just as good as always. Falafel isn't though. The roasted chicken is a staple, but a bit boring to me nowadays. Here's some pics:

Oh, and if you want falafel, you gotta try Sahara Falafel. Simply. Awesome. Also in Anaheim.

For old school breakfasts, try the Original Pancake House. A must: the German Pancakes.

      Hello Oh Robin,

I sympathize for you having to be out of the house for a week. Now is a good time to eat at any places you have been dying to try out.

I have been to the La Palma Chicken Pie shop for take out. Had their chicken pie and can't say that I would recommend it to anyone looking for some good chicken pot pie. It is a decent chicken pot pie, but nothing really that fantastic. Very reasonably priced though. Very much a 1970's vibe in there.

I would second Zankou for some rotisserie chicken. Not too far away either.

Zankou was good, but if it wasn't for that amazing garlic paste, probably not so much. I guess I'm just partial to Juan Pollo.

Went to OG Pancake today. Got the 49'ers, bf got the apple pancake. Delish! Thx

      3. My wife and I like the chicken pie shop.
Opened in 1955, it doesn't get much more old school than that.
Dinners, including soup, salad, beverage and dessert, are about $6.50.
Lunch is a couple bucks less.
        Closed Sundays.

The bad reviews I've read have been the about LA Zankou locations.
I've never had a bad experience at the Anaheim branch.

        1. Good rotisserie chicken can be had at King Pollo on State College just south of La Palma Avenue -- about a ten minutes' drive from the Resort. I don't know about turkey burgers but my usual destination for burgers is Burger Boy on State College between Cerritos and Katella.

          1. re: Das Ubergeek

I had a decent turkey burger last night at Knowlwood on Harbor. Liked the hand formed patty but was really lacking seasoning and flavor. Also, they can't do well done fries to save their life. Good homemade ranch though.

Noticed that Spaghetti Factory is right next store. Thinking of going for old times sake, not sure though.

A co-worker recommended The Olde Ship in Fullerton. Good?

            1. re: Oh Robin

              Good.

              1. re: Oh Robin

Olde Ship is good but hardly healthy.

The only good old fashion diner I can think of is not that close, it's at City of Industry - Frisco's!

Another good place but probably a 15-20 minute drive is Taco Nazo at La Habra and Beach.

I know others think there's a better vietnamese sandwich shop elsewhere, but Lee's Sandwiches at Harbor Blvd is not far from the mousedom.

                1. re: notmartha

I've seen Taco Nazo on my way to Molcasalsa. (I work in Santa Fe Springs) What do you order there?

Been to Frisco's in Long Beach but wasn't that impressed except for the chili cheese fries... yum.

Drove by Lee's Sandwiches and was thinking about giving it a go.

                  1. re: Oh Robin

Shrimp tacos. Fish tacos. Potato tacos (either with salsa or fish-taco style with crema, cabbage and lime). Chiles guerros.

                2. re: Oh Robin

If you go to the Olde Ship in Fullerton, be sure to get the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

                  1. re: OCAnn

I actually did go but was so full from the bangers dessert was out of the question. Should have made the pudding my meal! :)

                    1. re: Oh Robin

You can always pick up the pudding next time at the British Grocer (not far from the restaurant)

              2. Park Avenue Restaurant on Beach Blvd in nearby Stanton is a fun Rat Pack type ambience, with classic American cuisine. If you're on a budget, all Appetizers are half priced between 4-6 and $2 Drafts and drink specials.

                1. re: socalfoody

Park Ave is on my list. Best dishes? Dress code?

                  1. re: Oh Robin

Anything chop-related, and "cool casual" -- no need to dress up (we ARE talking about inland OC here!!)

                    1. re: Oh Robin

Has the feel of fine dining - but people definitely dressed way down on the 2 nights I went (I think the Stanton address plays a big part). We loved the Lobster and Corn Fritters and the Bone-in Ribeye. They also usually have a 3 or 4 course monthly special.

                      1. re: socalfoody

Saw some pics on yelp and everything looked good. Maybe my "birthday" is coming up and I can score a bread pudding. :)

                  2. For cheap & pretty good pizza head down to Pizza Rosa on Lincoln & Rio Vista. They have pretty good pizza that's cheap and last time I was in there they still had pictures of the Pope and JFK scotch-taped to the walls. They have cheap dinner take-out sepcials too.

I second the Park Ave. suggestion. They hae great food at a reasonable price, and their happy hour is good.

                    1. For healthy take-out, you might consider Rutabegorz or Sidney's Cafe, both in downtown Fullerton. Ruta's has great salads, sandwiches & soups. Sidney's is similar to Ruta's but they offer a smaller menu and they can do vegan. Sidney's "meats" are made from tofu.

For cheap, there's a Mongolian BBQ place on the s/w corner of State College & Chapman.
