New Year's Eve Dinner - downtown Montreal
I've been trying to make resos but all the places I've called seemed to be closed. Any suggestions? Looking for something with max $20 something mains, if that helps with price range, and any type of cuisine as long as it's good. Thanks!
I went to Lemeac in the past and had fun. Lively, good bet.

Ummm, you want something for New Year's Eve with a maximum budget of $20 for an entree?
Not gonna happen.

It's going to be difficult. In Quebec by law you need to be closed 1 day after either Christmas or New Years with only some exceptions. Most choose to close on the 2nd since the 26th is a busy day. So you may be limited to restaurants in hotels.

HUH?
Pretty much every restaurant in town offers an overpriced "package" of some sort for New Year's eve. What does that have to do with the day after????

OOPS, I read the day after. SHITE! New Years Eve, go nutz everything is open!

Not gonna happen though on $20 max for an entree. Most places don't even have an a la carte menu for NYE - it's table d'hote all the way - like it or not.

I actually went to Mesquite last year on New Year's eve, you could choose from a table d'hote or their regular menu, where many mains are under $20. But you gotta like Southern BBQ and live blues music :-) I know some people have had bad experiences there but I've been there on a dozen occasions and it's always been great food - I love the catfish and the salmon in particular - with good service.
This year's New Year's info is already up - there's a $25 cover, including a glass of champagne.

Well I stand corrected. I really never thought that a restaurant would have something "doable' on New Year's eve. Thanks for the info kp.

Whoops, I should clarify that Mesquite isn't quite downtown Montreal - it's in NDG, about 10-15 minutes from downtown by car. Missed that, sorry!

Thanks for this bit of info. I had no idea it was like this!

Yeah, consider yourself warned. Most of time, New Year's eve in a restaurant downtown is THE biggest rip off.

I sometimes go to Chinatown for a NYE chowdown with friends - call ahead to make sure the resto is open though - it varies year to year. One year I went to Beijing but the next year they decided to close early.
