Sturmi-No goose in Vienna after mid-November?

Hi-I saw your post regarding goose a bit further down-I'm coming to Vienna the first week in December. Will there be any game on the menus at that time? Are there any special December dishes I should keep alert for? Thanks!

    Hi Missy,

Of course there will be a lot of game dishes in December.

December is the busiest time for restaurants in town, all filled up with Christmas parties. We celebrate Christmas throughout the "fasting period" of December, every company invites their employees for a big dinner. In addition to these "local activities", Vienna has also now a new high season for tourists who come for the many Xmas markets all over town.

It IS a special athmosphere, so please come and enjoy, but you might find yourself drinking mulled wine or "orange punch" and eat hot potatoes, fried potato patties or hot chestnuts out in the open, and not an upscale dinner in a restaurant...

So, if you come to Vienna in the first week of December, be prepared for solidly booked restaurants everywhere. Maybe you decide right now whether you want to go to Meinl am Graben, Palais Coburg, Zum finsteren Stern or one of the other recommended places, and reserve two or three weeks in advance.

BTW: The situation is even more difficult in the weeks between Dec 24 and Jan 6. Vienna is FULL of tourists, and many restaurants are closed for a - deserved - vacation after the busy pre-Xmas season...
