Turlock and Modesto

What do you recommend in these two towns? Looking for good chow. Looking for any suggestions. Thanks.

  1. El Charro in Turlock is good. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely check out Old Tyme Pastries in Turlock too. If you are willing to venture out to Los Banos (south of Turlock), Woolgrowers is well worth the drive.

    1. For dim sum in Modesto check out this thread:

There was a nice place in downtown Modesto - a lunch/dinner cafe style place but I'm blanking on the name and a while ago there was a recommendation for an out of the way Thai place on Standiford.

      1. Thank you both for the recommendations. Dynasty has been on my must try list for a long time. Last time I was there, it was closed; I think it was a Monday. El Charro is a new rec to me so I will have to investigate.

        1. Arrived in Turlock after a long drive and decided the last thing I wanted to do was get back in the car and drive. Asked the girl at the hotel registration desk if there was anything within walking distance and lucky for me there was. Gyros and More is in the same center as Target and a lot of fast food places. Nabbed a reasonable gyro rice plate dinner that came with lots of gyro, saffron rice, a salad, tzatziki sauce and an Italian dressing. Added a glass of wine and after tax, the total was $13.00! A bargain and I have a large container of leftovers to take home with me. A very healthy dinner in a place with nice atmosphere. Why the place isn't mobbed is beyond me. I was the only customer in the place. The Panda Express next door had about 30 customers when I left.

Got done with dinner too late to try out the Old Tyme Pastries. Maybe tomorrow before I leave the area. Thanks again for the recs.

Of course I find this AFTER you needed it, but the recommendation was for a place called Thai House on Standiford.

Thanks for the rec. I will be back in a little over a month so I will get another chance to chow. I had planned on hitting Dynasty on my way back up north today but my host took me out to a little cafe in Livingston during the middle of my trip so I wasn't hungry enough to eat aagin. So I will have to eat again another day!

Marked my map for it. Thanks. I haven't made my lodging reservations yet but I will try to stay somplace convenient to this restaurant and the place that salvage recommended. Also need to find the olive oil place that drmimi recommended.

I agree about Gyros and More. We drive frequently between Stockton and Fresno and it was a great change from the usual fast food or chain restaurant on Hwy 99.

Ate at a decent Persian restaurant across the street from CSUS; authentic and reasonable prices.

Ate an awesome hot pastami sandwich from the Scotts Sub Co Sandwich Shoppe in Modesto near the community college. I am looking forward to the next time that I can have another.

                  Hi dimsumgirl,
From your username, am assuming that you're Asian hence you might want to try Tasty Thai at Coffee Road near Briggsmore and Sushi Garden at the same complex where Dynasty is (Coffee and Sylvan).
