Shops of Saugus - tenants

Developer announced today that the anchor tenants will be Pet Smart, Lazy Boy and TRADER JOE'S. This will definitely help take the sting out of Wild Oats closing. I'm excited to finally have a convenient Trader Joe's location to this area.

Additional tenants will be Starbucks and Border Cafe.

  1. Thanks for the info. Will love having the TJ's close by, too- I usually stop at the Burlington TJ when I make my treks to Wilson Farms in Lexington. No hassle on a Saturday am, but traffic during the week is miserable, and I usually run out of yogurt before shopping day. Will be nice to be able to shoot up to Saugus. Hate Starbucks, and have never been to Border Cafe.

    1. Where are the Shops of Saugus going to be located? Is it on Route 1 North or South?

It will be Route 1 North, next to the Saugus Animal Hospital. The construction is going on right now. Sounds as though they are trying to duplicate the shops on Route 1 South (Starbucks, Border Cafe, Lazy Boy)

The old Caruso's Diplomat on Route 1 in Saugus

          1. re: kate used to be 50

I drove past there last week and saw the construction trucks. I wondered what they were building. Thanks

        2. Hurray!!! Trader Joe's. I'm happy! Many thanks for the information. Additionally, I thought Market Basket was going in there...or is that in another location on Rt. 1 North?? There seems to be a few construction sites there.

Edit: Just did a quick check and the Boston Business Journal has announced that Qdoba Mexican Grill will be in there as well. Is that possible - Border Cafe, and Qdoba???

That's where I thought I heard Market Basket was going, but I can't imagine they would put a Market Basket and TJs in the same shopping center. I am looking forward to TJs but I'll be bummed if it means the Market Basket rumor is unfounded. TJs is great if you're not brand loyal but sometimes I just want my Frosted Mini Wheats, not the TJs alternative.

            1. re: Chris VR

A new Market Basket is being constructed in Reading, just off Rt.128. It is located directly behind a new Stop & Shop. They could not be any closer together.

              1. re: Chris VR

I THINK the Market Basket is going between Cap World and Mac's on Rte. 1 N

                1. re: taxi

Well whatever happens, whoever goes in there.... it will be better than it was before. I always thought that space was a terrible waste of resources.

Perhaps we'll meet..... I'll be the one with the rose between my teeth. J/K

            2. WHen is the Wild Oats closing? I have looked on the Trader Joes site and have not seen anything about a new location opening in Saugus. I wonder if has not been updated in a while.
I am upset about Wild Oats closing! It is one of my favorites!

to read updates, etc. It is not specific on which stores will become Whole Foods, I know the one in West Medford will, but Saugus, not sure.

                1. re: phonelady

Wild Oats in Saugus closed several months ago. I now make the trek to Woburn for Whole Foods. I understand that the Wild Oats location does not have a new tenant.

                  1. re: phonelady

They told me no, they were not converting Saugus to Whole Foods when I asked the cashier in October.

                  2. re: MtVernon

Whole Foods website also said there is a store in development for Lynnfield. Also, anyone know when the Medford Whole Foods will complete the renovation and open?

                    1. re: Suzieg

The Lynnfield site will be in the old Pleasure Island area off Route 128; it must have been chosen when the site at the jct of Rtes 128 & 28 at the Reading/Stoneham line ran into approvals trouble (though that store is also listed as in development).

It will be in the new shopping center where the Colonial restaurant and golf course are now. I like the idea of having a Whole Foods so close but I hate what the whole development will do to my neighborhood.

                        1. re: DianneF

It that golf course closing, then? It's been there since forever. Having a Whole Foods so near is a good thing, I guess. But I still wonder what will go into the WO location. Cannot wait to see the new Market Basket!!!!

                          1. re: Gio

The restaurant became functions only a couple of years ago and I believe the golf course is now closed. There is talk that the developer has given the land from the back part of the course (it's all swamp) to the town for a 9 hole course. My house overlooks the golf course. I'm not particularly thrilled about the whole thing. I also heard that there was a Morton's Steakhouse going in there but that could be no more than rumor.

                            1. re: Gio

You're thinking of the new Meadow walk in Lynnfield project. Currently the only signed tenant will be Whole Foods. I've heard that a very tentative opening date is summer of '09. There will be at least one, if not two restaurants in the project. There will be a new P F Chang's restaurant in the North Shore Mall.

                    2. Yes - MY Trader Joes is leaving Swampscott and taking up new residence in Saugus. Very disappointed

I'm with you there, lemmondrop. It's my (sniff-sniff) Trader Joe's, too. I have no way of getting to Saugus. Believe me, I'm not a happy camper...
