Ray's Steel city in Tallahassee

What an interesting restaurant. It went into where the old los compadres was by the Tallahassee mall. From the outside it looks like the same but the inside has been cleaned up a lot. My DH made me go last Sunday and it was much better than I expected. The owners had a florida restaurant in pittsburg and decided to open a pittsburg restaurant in Florida. The menu was much different than what I had expected (average bar food).

They have perrogies (spelled right?), crab cakes, and really nice starter menu. I had the panko crusted fried mozz. triangles. All of their breads, french fries, chips, dressings, etc. are homemade. My DH had a wonderful stuffed meatloaf sandwich for lunch (stuffed with mashed potatoes and covered in gravy). It was really good. I tried the chicken tortilla soup which was good but not enough chicken. The conch chowder was also good but very peppery.

Besides lunch they serve small plates and entrees at dinner. It is a neat northern twist to a southern menu. My DH has been back several times for lunch meetings. He dared to try the fried bologne sandwich with french fries and coleslaw on it. He is now addicted, I am still trying to get up my nerve.

I have tried this place twice and I really like it. While it won't blow your doors off, the food is freshly prepared, reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is nice. Service, while good overall, has some rough spots. I've had a burger and a club and both were good.

I have been back once more and feel the same. We had an absent minded waitress this last time but I had the chicken salad wrap and it was great. I like the chips better than their fries and really liked the onion rings.

    2. I had two terrible meals there in 45 days. Then decided to give it one more try, traveled two hours specifically to hear a music act and dine, and then the show was rudely stopped by one of the owners (wife). As a musician myself with thousands of shows experience over 30 years, I felt it necessary to explain proper decorum in these situations. She was EXTREMELY belligerent, used gutter language, and her actions guaranteed I'll never step foot in the place again. DON'T GO TO RAY'S!

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. Did they have any business at all othe rthan you and th eact? Place always looks dead of cars when we come out of the movies.

Hello crewsweeper. The only crowd there was in the basement listening to the music... and the cut the last set after two tunes. Then they became REALLY ugly with the musicians and the patrons. NOT a good way to build business. I will NEVER have a good thing to say about them again!

      2. A friend and I tried this restaurant in July. Food was terrible, restaurant was dirty, and the waitress was non-existent.

My friend found lipstick marks on her glass (YUCK) and when she sent it back with the waitress, we observed the waitress and the manager looking at the glass and discussing it instead of just getting a clean glass right away.

I will not go back to this restaurant.

        1. I have to say that I have eaten at Ray's many times and always had a good experience. Their "chips and salsa" is actually fresh fried tortilla chips smothered in cheese and chili. Very good. And my daughter is addicted to their pierogies. The service can be slow but we have always had good personnel serving. The brunch is really good too.

          1. I've eaten there quite a few times and think the food is pretty good. We've had some terrible service though. One time, during a lunch with terrible service, we were sitting close to a table where the employees would gather. I heard lots of foul language and then noticed one of them was the owner (female). The last time that I ate there, nearly a year ago, I witnessed this same female owner being a real bi.... I've decided never to give them my business again.
