India Palace - Bishop, Ca
I am such a happy hounder. I found some really good Indian food in, of all places, Bishop, Ca. The day started with a not so enjoyable ride over the Tioga pass - with a number of miles (and a few tunnels) spent behind a striping machine - these do NOT go fast even on a good day. But once I hit Lee Vining, thing started looking up food wise. I stopped at the Mobil station and ordered a chicken sandwich to go. This thing is a HUGE breast of chicken with a not so typical mango salsa on top. Be warned though, eating it in the car can be hazardous to the cleanliness of one's outfit. (I made it through only about half of it before I gave up.) Later in the afternoon I hit Shaat's because I was hungry and needed something to tide me over. I'll stock up on the bread tomorrow morning when it's fresh but I had a ham and cheese croissant and an apple turnover in a pastry dough that was very, very good.
Then it was time for dinner. I had heard of this place and asked about it at a local coffee shop where they said they had heard good things. It was. I ordered the following:
Yes, I LIKE spicy and this did not disappoint. It was probably too much to combine vindaloo with the masala but I had to try it. The naan was sweet with pistachios and raisins. So this balanced some of the heat. Next time I'll try to restrain myself and go for a more "balanced" heat level. My order would have easily fed two (probably with leftovers). I packaged at least half of it for later this week.
If you like Indian, definitely give this one a try. It's just north of Shaat's (same side of the street) in shopping area where the Imperial Garden (I think that's the name) restaurant is.
