Where are you from? Are you looking to sample something local AZ or just good food?

We are from Baltimore and will have been in Las Vegas ( Bouchon, Picasso), Grand Canyon and Sedona ( Cowboy Club, Barking Frog). Trader Vic's is a nostalgia trip - long story. We want something within walking distance, good food and fun.

I've not dined there, but several here, and in my acquaintance have. It seems that those, who knew the old Trader Vic's, do not like it. However, many on this board, and I do not know their history with the space, report that it is good. Your reference to a "nostalgia trip," prompted me to mention this.

I think you'll find Cowboy Ciao a great space, albeit a bit noisy for my personal tastes. I still journey there for the food and the wine, and do not expect a lot of conversation. I just smile, and nod a lot, but I'm old and nearly deaf, so for a younger soul, it might not seem to loud at all.

Enjoy and have a safe trip,
        Hunt

I and my group had a fantastic time at Trader Vic's. It is pricey, and you can easily rack up the charges if you splurge, but we loved it nonetheless and enjoyed every moment. The food was very good (especially the fried dishes) and the service was top notch.

Something else that is very close by and a leisurely walk is Tandoori Times, an upscale Indian bistro with some great food and a very clubby atmosphere. I have eaten there twice and been very pleased.

Grazzi pizza is just a couple of blocks down the street and has good italian food and great pizza pie. Nice wine list as well. worth a stop if you're walking around.

I like Grazzi a lot. Every time I've been there the owner (can't remember his name) is behind the bar, pouring out wine and chatting up his customers. Great pizzas, too.

We ate at Trader Vic's shortly after it opened, and we were somewhat underwhelmed. Perhaps, as Bill mentioned, I was thinking about the old version too much. Since then I have read several very good reviews, so it may have improved.

As Seth mentioned, Trader Vic's is very expensive. For the money, I'd rather eat at Taggia, Rancho Pinot Grill or Methode Bistro. All are within 5-10 minutes of your hotel.

Cowboy Ciao is a great choice. I hope you have a great visit here.

barry - thanks for your suggestions. I'm thinking Methode Bistro is the best choice - we're looking forward to Scottsdale.
