Vegas, my kinda town - for dinner anyway
After pouring over the Southwest board for information on Vegas and driving Mr CF crazy with the amout of time I was spending on it... :-) , we decided on Bouchon, Joel Robuchon, B & B, Michael Mina and Daniel Boulud.
Bouchon : We had the Terrine de Fois Gras Canard and Rillettes aux deux saumons – fresh and smoked salmon rillettes. Of the two the Salmon was my favorite far and away and I love pate. It was light and fresh and amazing.
Salade Maraichere au chevre chaud - salad with warm goat cheese.
Gigot d’Agneau – slices of lamb leg with polenta and summer squash - the lamb was a bit rare for my tastes but Mr CF is always willing to help me out so it was all good. The sauce with this was absolutely incredible, I used my bread to soak it up, I was not going to let that go to waste!
3 cheeses w/honeycomb - I don't know what the cheeses were, they were all good. So good that since we were finishing with them I wasn't interested in dessert. Our waiter brought us Profiteroles and little chocolate cakes w/ice cream anyway - a sweet thing to do.
We had a Sea Smoke Botella 2005 with dinner and I had 2 glasses of Veuve. The Sea Smoke was very good with everything and reasonable priced.
Joel Robuchon : I actually already wrote a mini blurb about this on another post - White Truffles - LV. Ciaobelly asked about our dinner in that post so I won't repeat myself here. I'm sorry I don't know how to link that here.
B & B : Oh my! This was our favorite restaurant of the trip. Mr CF has family (Pizzolato) in St Louis, his cousin still lives on The Hill, his best friend growing up was Italian (Starneri) and Mr CF is very very particular about Italian food. He loved his dinner at B & B.
Augustino's salumi (Batali's dad) - wonderful salumi and the fried olives were to die for.
Mint lamb purses - mint pesto in a spicy lamb ravioli. Loved it.
Mr CF had Pappardelle Bolognese. Midway through my lamb purses we switched plates (married long time) and well... I thought the pappardelle was fine but not as good as the lamb purses. Mr CF thought the lamb purses were fine but not as good as his pappardelle - we switched back. :-)
Rabbit – prepared 4 ways: confit, fried, braised, sauteed. I ignored the "ohhh poor bunny" coming from the other side of the table and ate with abandon - well, still with my good manners but you know what I mean. This is so good.
Homemade Orecchiette w/sweet sausage and rapini. I didn't even get a bite. LOL I think it was a success!
Donuts with chocolate sauce. You ever have a dessert that you smile at? And enjoy the heck out of? This was it. I think I could eat this every day if I could.
We had a magnum of 1999 (bussia) barolo poderi aldo conterno - reasonable priced and really good. This is the first time I've ever had our glasses 'seasoned'. Interesting practice - anyone know why this should or is be done?
I would highly recommend this place. I know I've read about it here and there is both negative and positive experiences - mine was more than positive. Wow.
Michael Mina: my overall impression was meh... sokay. I started with the Artisinal hams – Kurabuto prosciutto, Jamon Serrano, Speck - after the salumi at B & B, this was okay but not wonderful.
Miso glazed Black Cod - very good. I love it when a fish is so tender it just falls apart with the slightest touch of your fork.
I had a banana something or another for dessert.
We had a Faust Cabernet Sauvignon with dinner. I personally didn't think it was the right choice for our dinners but our dinner companions wanted it so we said okay.
Daniel Boulud: we had a seat by the window and so were able to watch the 'show' through out dinner. Interesting! I had the fois gras terrine special - it was very good but I thought it needed a pinch of salt. There was also a fruit compote (I think) that was also very good especially with the terrine but I have forgotten the fruit.
Crispy duck confit w/frisee salad and poached egg with crisp lardons. Very good even though the duck wasn't so crispy. I love crispy skin.
Littorai Pinot Noir - I didn't get the year or the particular vineyard this came from but it was very reasonably priced and very good especially with the duck. We talked to the wine director about his pricing and actually thanked him for this - after the debacle at Joel Robuchon - we appreciate a wine list that the primary goal doesn't seem to be "fleece the patron".
I had wanted to go to Lotus of Siam and had actually planned on going until it occured to me (while sitting in traffice with an suspended license - looong story) that I would truly be the only one, of all the people I knew who were going to Vegas that week, who would appreciate it. I should have sucked it up and gone anyway. Next time Dave Feldman!
