Birmingham - Taqueria Valencia on Lorna Rd

I tried to go get a late lunch at Silver Coin but it closes between 3 and 5:30. In that same strip mall is Taste of Thailand and Taqueria Valencia, among other places. I noticed chorizo, carnitas, al pastor, barbacoa, lengua and other types of meat and preparations so I gave it a try. Complimentary chips and salsa were ok, kind of bland. Chorizo taco was good with the seared chorizo and a little pico de gallo, plus a squeeze of lime and some of the salsa verde which the waitress brought out with the taco. Only one tortilla, which I find unsual, but a delicious taco nonetheless at $1.75. Torta al pastor was near perfect with the pressed bread, cheese, beans, fresh slice of avacado and slices of pickled jalapenos, plus tomatoes and lettuce. I squired both the salsa verde and some of the homemade red sauce from the bottles provided. Man I love tortas when properly prepared. Total with a coke was like $9. I'll definitely return soon.

      T. Valencia is pretty good. I prefer Taqueria Mexico down Lorna toward U.S. 31, in the little plaza that is supposed to look like a Swiss village. Their tacos are great, with all the above-mentioned ingredients (I'm crazed for carnitas). They also have quail on the menu. Taqueria Mexico makes good tortas, as well.

Another good torta spot in that area is on Lorna in the other direction, just before the Bruno's It's called Chivo, I think. It's in the same little area as the Shipley's donuts.

It's always a tough call between carnitas and al pastor. For tortas I prefer al pastor but for tacos, I like carnitas.
