My husband I had dinner last night at Amalia. I made the reservation after reading a good review and seeing several positive comments here. A short time after I made the reservation, the chef left but I needed a place close to Carnegie Hall and decided to try it anyway. I'm not sure what is going on but the service and our meal was terrible. After we watched a server wander around the dining room carrying plates and head back into the kitchen, our server came to the table and asked if we had already eaten. When we said no, she said "Oh, they brought your meal to the wrong table." We were then served these now-cold dishes. I had ordered a shrimp dish which arrived without shrimp and with what I didn't realize until later, empty mussel shells. When I questioned our server, thinking I had been brought the wrong meal, she said "No, that's it". But after searching what looked like a bowl of garbage, I asked again and was told "Yeah, that doesn't look right". The night ended after a series of service mishaps and being charged (didn't want to fight but should have) for something I didn't eat and one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Manhattan. Any visitors might want to wait until this place gets it act together.
Wow! This doesn't sound anything like the excellent meal we had there earlier this year. It was a Sunday evening, and Ivy Stark, the chef who just left, was not there. So, that shouldn't have been a factor. I think the chef de cuisine, Adam Ross, who has replaced her as executive chef, was in charge of the kitchen that night. So it's a mystery to me what exactly was going on in your case. Nothing good, obviously!
In my view, this is the kind of situation that definitely calls for a discussion with a manager. I guess that the nice way of saying you should have complained on the spot. There was no reason for you to have paid for this disaster of a meal.
Sounds like a terrible dining experience and i'm reasonably sure it wasn't cheap.
I hope it never does, but If anything like that ever happens to you again, don't lose your composure, and don't pay the bill. Just calmly inform the staff your service and meal were unacceptable and leave.
