Matsutake at Whole Foods

While walking along the river for the Head of the Charles I stopped in to the River Street Whole Foods to pick up an OJ, took a look around and found that they had fresh masutakes (as well as porcini, lobster, and a variety of others). These are great and fragrant mushrooms, very popular in Japan, and harvested in the fall. I've ordered matsutakes from Oregon in the past, and was planning to next week, but had only seen them in NY markets before... so I got four (two grade 1, unopened veils, and two grade 2). The price was $39/lb, online I had found $24/lb plus shipping, so getting a couple here rather than ordering a lb seemed a good deal.

Siena farms at the Copley Farmer's market also often has them, as well as porcini, hen-of-the-woods, chantrelles and others (usually around 4 types, but they often change). They're all $10/.25 lb. I got some lovely porcinis on Friday, very fresh and clean.
