Rec Needed Orlando, UCF area

Will be on business near UCF. I would appreciate, lunch and dinner recommendations, open to anything as long as it is casual.

Another place I'm trying to remember is a chinese BBQ/noodle place across the parking lot from a publix. I think it might be on E colonial. Where were also a few vietnamese places around. Do I have he neighborhood right? Is there a place there like that or any you would recommend?

  1. Almost all the Vietnamese restaurants are clustered together along Colonial Drive and Mills Avenue intersection, close to downtown Orlando and not terribly close to UCF. However, I believe you could pick the 408 (East-West Expressway) near UCF and get off on Bumby Avenue, which would take you to Colonial and then a left turn to the Vietnamese neighborhood. My favorite Vietnamese restaurants are Little Saigon (where I ate tonight) and Lac Viet.

My favorite Thai restaurant in town is in the monolithic Waterford Lakes shopping center near UCF. It's called Thai Singha, and it is around the corner from Best Buy. Everything I've ever tried there is great, but the pad kee mao (drunken noodles) are my favorite, and the best I've ever had anywhere.

I also love Sonny's Real Pit Barbecue, which has a location on Alafaya Trail, not too far from UCF. And Lazy Moon Pizzeria has HUGE, thin, crispy, New York style by-the-slice pizza with gourmet toppings, in a strip mall directly across the street from UCF, on Alafaya and University. They are right next to a good casual bar with a huge beer selection, Underground Bluz, and Jeremiah's Italian Ices, which are great on a hot afternoon.

      Jeremiah's Italian Ices

Is this related to the Jeremiahs that is now in Maitland where the old Edy's used to be ?

I believe it is, and there's another one on Aloma, near Boston's Fish House.

Can definitely second Thai Singha....great food and friendly service. Also had outstanding Indian food (closed Sunday....can't remember the name but definitely worth a visit) in the strip mall you mention on Alafaya and University, and a pretty good Vietnamese place (closed Saturday) for pho right next door. On my next trip up, I'm going to try Bubbaloo's BBQ on Alafaya....have heard only good things about it here.

As for Bubbalou's, the Winter Park location on Lee Road and 17-92 has some stuff the other locations don't, such as barbecue lamb (as great as it sounds).

OK, the excellent Indian restaurant is called Anmol and the address is 12239 University although it faces Alafaya....the Vietnamese place next door at 12245 is Miss Saigon.

a little international corner. I had lunch at the Jamaican restaurant in the strip mall there. Excellent and very causal

        2. I enjoy the Houlihan's that is on University. I know it's a chain, but it's consistently good. I also enjoy Peppinos and Giovanni's (Both on Alafaya).
If you want some place quaint but with good food - Paris Bistro - a little further away from the UCF but well worth it!!!
If you do go make a reservation.

          Peppino's Ristorante Italiano
100 Carrigan Ave, Oviedo, FL 32765

          Giovanni's Pizza
          4250 Alafaya Trl # 132, Oviedo, FL

          Houlihan's 526
11448 University Blvd, Orlando, FL 32817

          1. The Chinese place you're thinking of has got to be Tasty Wok, 1246 E Colonial Dr. If you didn't get the duck on your first visit, here's your second chance.

yes!!! that's the place. am making the drive tonight. Keep the recommendations coming. Had sonny's BBQ for lunch. I know it is a chain but it better than most places in the DC area. Yum. How is the Babaloo's near UCF for Ribs? Thinking about tomorrow.

Bubbalous is better than Sonny's! There is also a place on aloma called Geason's Grill. Its a neighborhood joint like benigans only more southern oriented and serves a stiff drink. I also like the middle eastern resturant at the corner of alafaya and university. They have an allyoucaneat lunch buffett that is killer!
For fried Chicken go to Maryland fried chicken near the corner of dean road and colonial drive. If you like gizzards youll love this place. Fried in peanut oil good!
For something way different go down the road a little further to Johnny's Caribbean Restaurant. They are located a couple blocks east of hwy 417 on colonial.
And for some reason I always like Hops for a chain. Their steaks are good and they think outside the box when it comes to their sides. I also like the shoestring potatoes on their salads!
For Chinese try China Club for take out only

Which Middle Eastern place on University and Alafaya? The little nondescript Armenian restaurant near Natura Coffeehouse, or a different place? I've been to the Armenian one before, but never seen a lunch buffet!

                  1. re: Big Bad Voodoo Lou

This place is not really on the corner. It is on a side street just behind the bldg on the southwest corner of Univ. and alafaya. I think the street called collegate way. It might have changed hands since i was there last.

                  2. re: mountdorahound

I ate at both sonny's and bubbalou this week. We had a lively discussion on if bubbalou's would be considered a chain. Regardless, their BBQ and the sauces were really good. I will be a regular.

              2. Best Italian in the area is Papa Gio's in Avalon Park. They have a sports bar/ italian rest/ pizza place/ and chinese place all connected. You can order off any menu and the food it delicious. I usually sit at the bar and order garlic knots and pizza. It's all the way down Alafaya make a right into Avalon Park and it's at the end of the first little strip on the right. You won't be disappointed.
