mystery greek recipe [Moved from General Topics board]

I think I saw it on the R. Ray travel show once. I believe it was tiny meatballs in what looked like yogurt sauce. Does anyone know what this dish is called?

Maybe it was this dish? http://greekfood.about.com/od/groundm...
Many of the Greeks who returned from Constantinople and Smyrna during the 1922 Population Exchance cooked dishes that used yogurt sauces, and would resemble some Turkish dishes.

Do you think it's possible the meatballs were in an egg-lemon sauce? That dish is called yiouvarlakia me avgolemono, and it is a creamy sauce that might look have looked like yogurt, although it doesn't contain any.

I'm pretty sure it was yogurt. I believe they were at a restaurant in DC called Mezza. I've looked it up on the internet but couldn't find it.

It looks like Ray visited http://www.zaytinya.com/ according to this link:

Zaytinya has both manti (meat dumplings in yogurt sauce) and meatballs with avgolemono on their meat mezze menu: http://www.zaytinya.com/meatMezze.htm.

Turkish meatballs in a yogurt (or minted yogurt) sauce = Kofta.

Greek meat balls (Keftedes) are served without a sauce). Another kind , tsoutsoukakia (not sure of spelling) are served in a tomato sauce. Have never seen greek meatballs in Yogurt. I agree, probably not greek but turkish or lebanese, armenian or some other such ethnicity.

Not sure about the dish as a whole but greek meatballs are called kefthedes. maybe you could start with searching for that on the web.
