Ice Cream Sodas

Ice cream sodas were one of my family's favorite treats when I was young, but as I got older and mom and pop ice cream places were replaced by Stone Cold Creameries and Haagen Daaz franchises, ice cream sodas were soon forgotten, overshadowed by the easier to make milkshake. If you aren't familiar it's similar to a milkshake but w/ soda water... but like baking, everything has to be just the right measurement.

Anyways, my sister is coming to visit me and she's considering finally making the jump to NYC. Of all the possible options I've offered the one thing she's requested is a proper ice cream soda. I've tried to stay fit and have purposely kept myself out of the many ice cream/gelato/frozen yogurt that I'm sure are around, but now I'm on a mission... so I'm seeking your advice.

Can anyone recommend a ice cream shop that makes an excellent ice cream soda. And preferably somewhere where we don't get a blank stare when we make our request? Just somewhere that appreciates ice cream in it's many various forms. Manhattan or outer boroughs, I'll travel wherever.

Hinsch's Ice cream parlor and luncheonette 8518 5th Ave in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn make an excellent ice cream soda/egg cream/malted. It's been around forever.
Take the 'R' train to 86th St and 4th Ave.Then enjoy some window shopping along 86th St.
Also:
Sedutto's Ice Cream Store on New Dorp Lane and Clawson St in Staten Island makes a killer ice cream soda..
Additionally, most neighborhood Carvel Stores makes a delicious version using soft serve ice cream.

carvel? really? their ice cream is so bad now, i can't imagine anything they make with it would be good.

I would tend to agree that many of them are lacking but In Staten Island and Brooklyn the Carvel stores I have been to, follow the directions and don't 'cut' the Carvel mix in order to create more product.

The last time I had a a vanilla ice cream soda at the SODA SHOP, I was sorely disappointed I am sad to report. It was simply not made well--it was soda water and vanilla ice cream--literally, barely any vanilla syrup in the soda water. It was most unsatisfying and NOT cheap. Cute shop though...

I can usually get passable, though not other worldly, ice cream soda at any above average diner.

Try Ray's on Avenue A, across from Tompkins Square Park. They also make great egg creams. Veselka used to make good ice cream sodas too, but I haven't had one in years.
