Upper peninsula dinner (near SFO?)

DavisSquare Oct 18, 2007 10:40 AM

So I'm having dinner with my parents and coming into the city is very sadly not in the cards. I'm coming from the South Bay and can pick one up at more or less any BART station between Daly City and Millbrae and drive a reasonable distance. The other will arrive by car so fairly easy parking is a must. So far I've dug up stuff mostly near the airport: Il Fornaio, Kuleto's Trattoria, Steelhead Brewery (is this too casual?). I'd love other recommendations too. So you have an idea, last time in was in SF, I had good eats thanks to recs from this board:

Thanks much in advance.

If Chinese food is on your list of possiblities, check out the recent reports on Asia Pearl, Millbrae. Luckily in the peninsula you won't have to worry about parking too much.

We've had this circumstance several times. I don't think I've ever done anything other than a Chinese restaurant in Millbrae. Zillions of authoritative reports on this board:

Thanks and it looks delicious. Much as I'd like to, I think Chinese is probably a bad idea, especially upscale Chinese, since a dinner with my parents could probably not include the good stuff. I'd skew European or new American to keep it safe. I have to say that, since I'm only in town for a day, I considered for a second whether to tell them or to head off into the city to eat alone. Ah well, filial duty wins out over chow.

I'd do a search for downtown San Mateo and Burlingame. Both are very close to SFO.

I wouldn't recommend Steelhead - very casual, kind of loud and the food is nothing to write home about. I personally prefer Il Fornaio over Kuleto's - it's a fairly straightforward choice for Italian. Other places that I enjoy in Burlingame for business dinners (i.e. catering to less adventurous palates) are Nectar (esp if your parents enjoy wine - and the food is pretty good too) and Straits Cafe. I've also heard good things about Broadway Prime but I've never been.

Thanks everyone. We have reservations at Straits so we'll see how that goes and I'll let you know.

Thanks for all the help. We had dinner at Straits in Burlingame last night. The short if it is food-pretty good but not fabulous, prices-expensive, portions-really tiny, service-friendly but inexperienced. Not great chow and not a good value for money. On the other hand, I've never seen so many swank kids clothing stores as in downtown Burlingame.

Thanks again everyone and if you're coming to Boston, please do ask over our way.
