Dinner at Bar Crudo

Last night I went with a friend to Bar Crudo,

We shared:

peel and eat gulf prawns
yellowfin tuna cubes
tombo tuna
hawaiian ono
octopus with tangerine oil (a special)
lobster and burrata salad with beets
seafood chowder

I've been here before and liked the lobster salad and seafood chowder a lot--these were hits again. Last time I think a leafy green was incorporated in the salad mix--this time it was beets. The beets were nice, but my focus was on the incredible texture and flavor of the cheese paired with lobster. This may be my favorite salad ever.

The seafood chowder is always good, and they were nice to split it into two bowls for us. It is quite rich and creamy--I don't think I would like an entire portion to myself, but a split order is perfect. The chowder included clams, mussels, white fish, shrimp, squid, potatoes and a nice smoky bacon flavor.

Of the crudo, I enjoyed the octopus with tangerine oil the most. We both loved the yellowfin tuna. The ono had a bit too much cilantro for me--it overpowered the subtle flavor of the fish.

My friend doesn't like oysters, so we split peel and eat shrimp instead. The shrimp were good, but for me a good oyster is better than the best shrimp. Next time I would probably order my own plate of oysters--the ones I had here last time were so good it was a shame to skip them.

Overall, the night was delightful--except the service. We had to ask twice to get our waters refilled, we ordered a bottle of wine and had to ask for a bucket and then pour it ourselves, something was spilled on the table after the first course and never cleared, and there were really long and unexplained gaps between the dishes.

It was neglectful and slapdash; considering the gorgeous dishes and carefully chosen menu, I expected a better quality of service here. I would go back and hope for the best next time.

Total tab was about $140, not including tip, with a reasonable bottle of wine.

  1. I, too, had a fabulous meal there recently. Like you, my absolute favorite was the lobster/burrata salad. The texture/taste sensation is out of this world. I had the chowder and the sample crudo plate. The crudo plate was excellent. Some of the best quality seafood I've had in the Bay Area. In contrast to your experience with the service, we were well attended and had none of the problems you had.

      It was strange--I've eaten at Bar Crudo 3 or 4 times before and never had a problem, so hopefully it's just one-time bad luck.

      I didn't mention that the restaurant also has a great beer list and is ideally positioned next to Tunnel Top for pre- or post-dinner drinks.

    2. I was just there a week or so ago and the salad featured heirloom tomatoes instead of beets...I guess I'm going to have to go back to do a comparison!
