Mara's Homemade...Pass

Went last night for the muffaletta. YOu had to pre order. By noon on Wednesday. I guess she needed time for the dough.
Well, the dough was hard and she even told us she screwed it up this time...The meat and the tapanade were great, but I almost broke a tooth on the bread.
The place itself smelled like a bathroom...

I too ordered the muffalettas last night. My boyfriend has been obsessed recently about finding a place that has them, so when I discovered Mara’s I ordered right away. Last night was my first time ever having a muffaletta, so I cannot claim to be an expert. However, from this experience, I don’t get the hype. The bread was hard as a rock. The cold cuts were ok, but nothing special. Basically, in this instance, it was an Italian sandwich gone wrong. I can get a similar, albeit mind blowing sandwich at any of the great Italian delis in my neighborhood. If ever in New Orleans, I will be sure to sample a muffaletta again. Here in NY though, particularly at this establishment, the muffaletta ain’t all that.
When I went to pick up my order, I also noticed the unpleasant and overwhelming scent of cat urine. An instant turn-off. As I sat there waiting for my order, I kept questioning how and why I would eat anything from an establishment that blatantly smelled so foul. I brushed off my misgivings when I should have turned and walked out the door.
Aside from the muffalettas, we ordered the gator bites, a half order of mac and cheese, fried green tomatoes and 1/2 dozen oysters. The gator bites were ok, I guess. But for $10 certainly nothing special...you'd receive the same experience by ordering fried chicken bites or something from KFC. The fried green tomatoes were soggy, mushy and upon examination in fact just regular old tomatoes (my favorite place for fried green tomatoes is dinosaur bbq). The oysters were good, but the macaroni and cheese was the highlight of an otherwise sad and unpleasant $66 takeout order.

went here back when it first opened, have not been back. Food sort of ok but nothing I couldn't make myself. The main problem was a chocolate cake that took literally 45 minutes to make...no warning about that until we had already been waiting 20 minutes. friendly but amateurish.
