I'm looking for good Thai food in Alabama. Southern 2/3 of the state preferred but will drive north - anything for some good larb.:) Also - would love recommendations for places to buy really good, fresh Thai ingredients - Mobile maybe? I'm thinking real Thai stores more than Fresh Market Thai spices, but all tips appreciated.

I haven't been through AL is over a decade, so I don't know if things have changed, but a few times in Mobile I had some of the best Thai food in the entire country at a place called "Bangkok Thai Cuisine" (and my Thai relatives concur with this assessment). They used to have a Thai-owned grocery pretty much next door to the place too. Not sure if either is still there, but here is their contact info. as best as I can google it:

    Bangkok Thai Cuisine
    5345 Hwy 90 W
    Mobile, AL 36619-4205
    Phone: (251) 666-7788

I recall that professional reviews back in the day labelled this place not only the best Thai in Mobile, but the best Thai in Alabama.

Apparently there's also a newer place closer to downtown Mobile called Busaba's Thai Cuisine. http://www.btc-mobile.com/ Online reviews claim it's now the most authentic in the city (but it's definitely more expensive and with smaller portions than Bangkok Thai). According to a review in the Mobile Register, "one of the finest, most refreshingly new meals we've had in a while." Anyway, if you're in the area, you might want to do a "Thai crawl" of both places.

Bangkok Thai Cuisine is fantastic. I eat there all the time and have yet to have a bad meal. The spring rolls and curries are can't miss.
