Any good, inexpensive Cuban places in Bergen County?

During the summer, I went to Miami Beach and all I ate was delicious inexpensive Cuban food. I would get a big chicken, rice, beans, and sweet plantains for $7 - $10.

I was wondering if there was anything like that I can get around this area. I think the hardest criteria to match would be the price.

  1. La Isla in Hoboken is where you want to go...not too far out of Bergen County! Wash Street between 1st and 2nd. Tiny place, great food, low prices. Excellent ropa vieja, too!

    1. There's a newish place on Main St. in Hackensack called Casual Habana Cafe. The food is pretty good and the prices are seriously cheap. I was there today and the owner was discussing raising his prices so hurry. I highly recommend the pernil and the basil lemonade.

      1. Cuban Eddies on West Shore Drive in Dumont. Rated as a top Cheap Eats in New Jersey Monthly Magazine. A real no-frills place. Lunch Specials start at $4.50 daily. Google and you can find the website. For whatever reason, these type places usually have "cafeteria", in the name. I have tried the Ox Tails and Roasted Chicken. Both were good and hearty. Something I would expect to be similar to a home cooked meal.

Do not limit yourself to Cuban style. There are many Colombian restaurant/luncheonettes that offer the same style of cooking......all for less than $5. Hackensack has a place on the corner of Neuman and Essex near Hackensack Hospital. Also on Main Street there are at least two places that I know serve this type of latin cooking, although I do not know their names.

If you travel either Kennedy or Bergenline Boulevards in the towns of West New York, Fairview(Anderson Ave.), North Bergen or Union City.....there are many to choose from.
