Fresh longan in Santa Rosa

Picked up some fresh longan from China this weekend at Asia Mart on Guerneville Road. They're about $2.50 per pound, sweet, juicy, and good quality. We still had a little RRV Gewurz on the table after dinner and my friends were amazed at how closely the flavors mirrored each other.

It is available at both Berkeley Bowl and Monterey Market so other places may have it.

Yummmm....Asia Mart - my favorite shop. Anyone know of a Mexican/Latin American equivalent in Santa Rosa area? I get to the Mission every so often, but long for a good one closer to home.

Lola's Market on Dutton @Sebastopol Ave is decent - the takeout meats are fairly good, as well (and the quesadillas at their attached restaurant are a good deal, esp. with the fairly extensive salsa bar).

Check out Quezada too, as it stocks some non-Mexican Latin American products to differentiate itself. Both Lola's and Quezada, plus the newcomer Rancho Mendoza are better than most of the mercados in SF's Mission.

Nope. I have purchased both Big John's and Fiesta/Pacific markets bulk chorizo and didn't like either of them. In that department, my hometown Salinas institution, Star Market, takes the prize.

Melanie. What is an exotic fruit like longan (my wife's favorite) doing in the outback that is Santa Rosa. Exactly where is this Asia Mart? Our kids are driving up there tommorrow.

The message boards have a new feature called "Places". If you click on the Asia Mart link in my post above or the same thing listed under "Places Mentioned" in the upper right hand side, it will take you to the Places page for Asia Mart with a google map and other information about the place. It's on the corner of Fulton Road. A little hard to access, as you can't make a left turn into the store's parking lot if you're approaching from Fulton. Easiest way to get there is to take 101 north, exit at Steele Lane, head west and it becomes Guerneville Road. The store will be on the right hand side just before intersection with Fulton. Hope they still have some.

If you continue heading west on Guerneville Road, you'll fine Wine Country Honey and after that, Willowside Meats.
