I tried floating the idea of biscuits and gravy to my kids and they made sad, ooky faces so I abandoned the idea (quite frankly, I wasn't feeling all that awesome about getting them hooked on such a would be heartattack)...Now I'm looking for biscuits plus...biscuits, and then some...(not gravy)...can be sweet or savory and maybe your favorite quickbread biscuit recipe...

There's a cute cookbook about biscuits that came out a few years ago,
"Biscuit Bliss: 101 Foolproof Recipes for Fresh and Fluffy Biscuits in Just Minutes" by James Villas

I also tweak my basic biscuit recipe all the time with whatever I want to add in, like dried fruits, citrus peel, more sugar, an egg, and so on.

This is my stand-by never fail recipe, which I got from my elementary school cookbook - I'm 32 now, so that gives you an indication of how long I've been using it ;)

2 C flour
4 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1 T sugar

Combine. In a 2 cup measure add:

1/2 C milk (skim, 2%, which ever you prefer)
1 egg

fill to 1 c with oil (I use olive oil but canola/veg works well also)

Sitr w/fork until just combined, pat out on floured surface, cut and bake at 350 for 8-12 mins, till golden and risen.

For a lil' somthing extra I brush the tops with marg. or butter as soon as them come out of the oven.

Some combinations I have tried (note: I add the extras to the flour mixture before adding the wet ingredients so that they don't clump together)

Green onion & Cheddar (1/4 c chopped green onions, 1/4 grated cheddar)

Parmesan & Herb (1T grated parmesan, 1T fresh parsley, 1 clove garlic, minced)

Cinamon & Raisin (1/4 C raisins, 1/2 cinamon)

This recepie is extremely versatile and any other combinations would work too eg. diced ham, sundried tomatoes, diced oilives, feta - I usually just jazz them up to suit whatever I'm making, altho the onion & cheddar is my fave and is AWSOME with homemade chicken soup :)

Serve them with a tiny bite of ham and some rasp. jam in the middle.

A lady on the food network chicken challenge did a sweet potato & bacon biscuits that looks good, so that's a different take on the bite of ham.

As for the gravy, I served biscuits with a roasted corn & rosemary gravy once, and people seemed to like it just fine. Nothing ooky about it. Nothing so very southern about, either. :)

Maybe you could think of the biscuits as a substitute for bread or other starch. Lots of different sandwiches you could make, plus sauces to go over them. I'm thinking of something along the lines of chorizo with white beans. Maybe with a very thick soupy consistency, and ladled over a split biscuit. Or chili.

Or you could go the other way and make them sweet. Biscuits make the best shortcake when topped with fruit and cream.

I don't have a recipe at the moment, but I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding some!

How do they feel about greens? Because I recently made scones with spinach, cheddar and pumpkin seeds that were absolutely delicious.

At the other end of the spectrum, make cornmeal biscuits and wrap the dough around cocktail weenies before baking.
