High end dining near New Haven, CT

I'm looking to get a gift certificate for a friend who lives in New Haven. I'd like a really nice place within driving distance that has excellent food and a pleasant ambiance. Any ideas? Thanks!

New Haven has a wealth of upscale really good restaurants: My suggestions would be:
Union League Cafe - upscale French
Bespoke - nouvelle American/world cusine
Ibiza - incredibly wonderful Spanish
Zinc - creative American
Pacifico - Nuevo Latino
Nini's Bistro - prix fixe byob

Any and all of the above would be a wonderful choice!

These are all great suggestions. I would also add Central Steakhouse.

BTW-- I believe most of the above can be accessed thru Opentable so that you can get phones, websites, etc.
