returned to Chenery Park this weekend for the first time in a while. It was a bit of an uninspired experience at first. Hostess poorly managed a very manageable group of comers and goers leaving us feeling a little annoyed before even being seated.

server was friendly and efficienct, though it took a long time for drinks to arrive, and she arrived a good long time after we ordered to mention that a few of the items we wanted were no longer available.

when the food arrived, it was delicious. mac and cheese and a summer salad to start, with papardelle and the pork chop as mains were all lovely, paired wih lovely wines suggested by our server. overall, the meal felt like a very good value as well, and all earlier slips were forgotten.

Glad to hear the food was as good as my experiences. I think they must have just had a handful of servers turn over or something; our last trip had service with some hiccups as well. I hope they sort that back out (and I hope they change their menu for fall soon, too).

hubby and I went last Tuesday: my boss gave notice at work and I really needed a martini and fried chicken and a chance to talk it all through with hubby! They were very good about seating us away from the kids (Tuesday is kids' night at Chenery Park) at the table I consider the best in the place (two-top in the front window, very quiet), so kudos for that. We did have a new server and she was very, very slow about taking drink orders (but then we wanted those drinks fast! ;-)) and bringing the check. Hubby ended up going up to hostess stand to ask the check because we had loong ago finished dessert but couldn't get her eye....

The martini and the fried chicken hit the spot however, and perhaps they have changed their menu for fall, because hubby had the turkey medallions, which I heard the hostess say to another diner (who was raving about them as she left) that they are on the menu till Thanksgiving, and while I didn't really taste them, hubby also raved about them. I did taste the chestnut bread pudding that accompanied them, and IMO it would have been much better without the chestnuts. However, I am not a chestnut fan, but hubby is, which was one of the aspects of the dish he loved.....

Haven't been since last spring, but we were regulars and always eat at the bar. Just a busy summer and fall, so haven't been back.

Just thought I'd point out that they fairly recently opened a second restaurant Eureka in the Castro and I know a lot of the staff throughout the house moved over there and we're training their replacements. Not sure how temporary or permanent each change was gonna be, but that may explain the newbie-ness. Not an excuse really, but maybe an explanation.

It would be good if they'd sent some of their more experienced servers over to Eureka. Although I wouldn't go back unless they also sent some kitchen folks. My wife and I had a pretty miserable experience and Eureka. We adore Chenery Park and so very much wanted to love Eureka...alas, we're sticking with CP.

There haven't been many reports on Eureka, so I'd be curious to know what you didn't like about the food there. I have been interested in going, since I do like Chenery Park, but then CP is a neighborhood place to me, so I go there when I want to be walking distance from home and want good somewhat Louisiana influenced comfort food and a good martini or a sazerac.(or two, hence the desire for the walking distance spot..)

Perhaps you could give us a Eureka report on a separate thread?

Meanwhile, adding a link.

I wrote about it right after we went about two months ago (and clearly, lots can change in a restaurant in that time).

There is a glowing report right below mine, for what it's worth.

I wrote a longer bit about it on my "blog" (I just really don't update it enough for it to be anything but a way for me to remember where we've eaten...)
