We wintered in Roanne for 6 years, and it is a lovely city with warm and friendly people.
Our favorite restaurant is a 20 minute car ride away in the tiny village of Saint Alban les Eaux. It is Le Petit Prince, and we went often to enjoy a delicious Sunday lunch surrounded by French families. (http://www.billandnancy.com/2001/02_F...
)L'Astrée, 17 Bis, Cours de la Republique, by the train station in Roanne is also good.
Roanne has a wonderful port with a very helpful international community of boaters. Go there and tap on any door to inquire about good restaurants along your canal route.
You will end up with a list as long as your boat.Bon voyage

re: plaisancière
Thanks for the link, Bill. I look forward to reading more especially your comments on Roanne. Our syndicated 10.5m merwecruiser lies there this winter & we start our cruise next May. First time we have been to Roanne during our ten year involvement with the syndicate. Thanks again. Bonne chance, de legume

Thanks chaps. Looks like le Central Bistro will be the starting point. Mike, Wonder if the barging friends have eating recommendations along the waterways north of Roanne (boating is reason for us to visit Roanne)? Thanks ChefJune...it's my 2FatLadies Fetish coloring my spelling. regards, legume

Roane is a terrible city. The only reason to go there is the Troisgros -- their gastronomic restaurant and their delicious bistrot next door called le Central. I should not say it loud but I ate better at le Central than in the premium restaurant.

re: souphie
I've not eaten at Troisgros, but we did have an excellent, memorable meal at Le Central. We were staying with food-loving friends on their barge in the port of Roanne and that is the only restaurant they took us to there. They did mention something about an all-you-can-eat frog legs restaurant somewhere in the countryside nearby though!

re: mikempl
Mike, you must have stayed on Festina Tardé. We took them to Le Sportif in Lentigny, were they fell in love with the frog legs. Our friend Christian who was head of the local gendarmarie had given us a list of all of his favorite "plate du Jour" spots in the Roanne area, and we had a great time checking each one off of our list.
Le Sportif says "Bar Tabac" outside and you would never think that there is a restaurant inside, without our list, we would have driven past and missed a great meal.
