I read on the Zagat website that Petit Robert Bistro is opening in the space vacated by Meze and Copia. Does anyone have more details?? Given the size of the space I wonder it it will be called Grand Robert Bistro!

Dunno. I'll toss in a review...

I ate in their South End restaurant Thursday night before Symphony. It was my first time there and I thought the food was very good. Our waiter was competent and enthusiastic about the menu. We split a braised endive smothered with grueyere starter. We both had their beet salad; a tower of beet slices interleaved with chevre. I had cassoulet with a generous piece of broiled duck cofit on top. It was very good though the one I make pays more attention to the lamb stew that anchors it. We split a bottle of far too young 2004 Vieux Télégraphe Chateauneuf du Pape.

At their price point, I'll be back.

Ugh.

If this has any truth to it I hope it is an expansion move and not to replace a current location. I am one of the PBR fans.

That location seems to be somewhat cursed and for one reason or another I think it has more to do w/ geography than food quality. If you go there, that's your evening, Most folks if they park near the restaurant or valet will not want to walk across the Charlestown Bridge for just over 1/2 mile to get to the NE or battle for parking near Olives, Warren Tavern or Tavern on the H2O( just to name a few). Sadly the Copia/ Mezze location is a virtual island.

It's too far on the fringe of Charlestown to attract a lot of locals (but there are a lot of residential complexes nearby) and it's too far for most North end visitors or residents to consider and that location and it doesn't have a nearby T location. Bad move.

Can't quibble with what you wrote with respect to dinner dining. For those of us, however, who work in the area is is TERRIFIC news. There are not a lot of choices for a nice lunch in the area. Anthem is gone and what remains are sports bars. We can go to Osteria on Canal (great place, little small and no wine) or truck over to NEnd (Massiminos is close and good) or up to Cambridge St. The walk over the bridge is easy and with PRB you know you'll get a great lunch (with wine if needed) at a reasonable price. No more drives over to hte S.End at lunch!

Yes, I was referring to the fact that the Petit Robert opening in that space was also reported in the local Charlestown paper. So take it for what it's worth, but they reported the pending opening of a second Max and Dylan's. I am not confusing it with West Street.

Statement in a recent local newspaper article:

The owners of Tavern on the Water will open a new restaurant next month in the space previously occupied by Copia.

“It’s a local neighborhood bar with casual American comfort food.” Brad Delback said of his new venture at 100 City Square, Max & Dylans Kitchen Bar, which is set to open by Nov. 15.

As the principals of the Legendary Restaurant Group, Delback and his business partner, Chris Damian own and operate Tavern on the Water and Scollay Square at 21 Beacon St., as well as the original Max & Dylans, which opened Sept. 9 at 15 West St. in the Theatre District. (Max & Dylans takes its name from Delback and Damian’s two sons).

Delback said the menu at the City Square restaurant will include comfort food staples, including sliders, macaroni and cheese, and meatloaf. The restaurant’s interior will remain similar to Meze, except for a different table setup. As for the décor, the restaurant will be adorned with more TVs and pictures of Fenway Park, the USS Constitution and other Boston landmarks.

When asked what would set Max & Dylans apart from Copia and Meze, the two ill-fated restaurants previously at 100 City Square, Delback responded that his restaurant would offer “low-priced American comfort food” in contrast to the other establishments’ “high-priced ethnic food.” (Copia, the last tenant at the location, closed on July 22, 2007, after operating for less than a year).

Delback added that he expects that tourists on the Freedom Field and TD Banknorth Garden patrons will make up much of his clientele, but he also hoped to attract professionals between the ages of 25 and 40.

Well, if it's owned by the same clowns that operate Tavern on the Water, count me OUT. Tavern on the water has the worst service and horrible food. Here's an excerpt from a review I posted:

2. We ordered the "Chips" off the Bar Bites menu. For an aggressive $7 charge, they promised to be seasoned with Lawry's and malt vinegar. What we were served were chips, straight out of a bag and poured into a small, disposable cereal bowl. Here is the conversation that took place between myself and our server regarding these chips:

Me: "I'm a little disappointed by these $7 chips."
Server: "I'm just a server. Do you want to talk to the owner?"
Me: "Not really."
Server: "I can't do anything."
Me: "OK, thanks"

3. A friend asked for water. Here's that conversation:

Friend: "Can I have a glass of ice water?"
Server: "Because the GM and owner are here, I can only sell you bottled water for $3."
Friend: "Way to take care of the designated drivers"
Server: "All they care about is the money. It's not my fault. Go to a particular URL and make a posting. They read it all the time."
Friend: "OK. Thanks.
