Lebanon IL: Sunday dinner suggestions

I will be going to Lebanon to see the Laramie Project at McKendree College. I will be going to the Sunday afternoon performance, and am looking for dinner suggestions: some place in Lebanon or near I-64 on the way back to St. Louis

  1. Just a few minutes south of Lebanon on IL Rt 4 is Mascoutah where you can eat a WONDERFUL German dinner at the Roemer Topf--it's off Main St , which Rt 4 hits in the middle of town--take a right onto Main and go to the high school; opposite the high you'll see an American Legion--turn left and skirt the Legion parking lot to the left on the little blacktop road--it takes you right to the restaurant.

I have spent a lot of time in Germany and have eaten at every German restaurant in the St Louis area multiple times and Roemer Topf is far and away the best. The chef is German and European-trained, the owner is German, half the wait staff is even German.

    1. I have also heard very good reports about Roemer Topf. The only real spot in Lebabnon for dinner would be Schiappa's. I do like the fact that almost all of their food is cooked to order. Their wings are awesome and they have a new appie called Italian potato wedges which is wedges, battered and deep fried and covered w/ an alfredo sauce & Parm...Bad for the heart...good for the belly..LOL The owner John aleways takes time to educate my kids,,,17 & 22 on how his dished are made on what true Italian should taste like.
      The Swansea location is closed.

      1. We went to the Roemer Topf, and I have to agree that the food was WONDERFUL. Note that the restaurant is also the clubhouse for the Mascoutah Country Club. Also note that they do not fill their walls with German kitsch - no atmosphere, just good food. We were a group of seven people and we all enjoyed our dinners.
