Help! My favorite burger is gone!

  • 9

I was recently dismayed to learn that the best burger in the East Bay has disappeared along with Zax Tavern in Berkeley, which closed last month. The burger here was amazing - like a good steak, it was seared, crusted black, and incredibly juicy. The beef was top quality; it had the taste and slightly gamey characteristic of a fine dry-aged steak.

Where o where can I get something similar? I used to enjoy the burger at Gordon's House of Fine Eats in SF, which met its demise a few years ago. I'm willing to cross the bridge again, but would prefer a recommendation in the East Bay.

  1. I am sad to hear that Zax Tavern closed. I always enjoyed that restaurant.

You might try Lukas' Taproom in Oakland. Their burger gets a lot of rave reviews.

    1. that is sad!! I also loved their place in SF (original). Maybe Luka's Taproom & Lounge? I use to live over there and I liked rockridge cafe's burger not the same as Zax but Bubba made the best burger not sure if he is still there.

I love Luka's burger. And the fries with aioli. It's ALWAYS cooked just right.

Haven't had Eccolo's burger, but I have had 900 Grayson's burger twice. Very good, but not great when I had them.

      2. I think Eccolo has the best burger in the East Bay. You can also get a very good burger at 900 Grayson, Lukas, and Gregoire (when it's on the menu- about two months out of the year).

Oh lord...Eccolo's burger is so delicious. I don't often crave a burger, but when I do, that is the only place that can satiate my desire.

I third that and seem to forgot about their burger. I just don't get over there enough these days.

        2. Since you mentioned SF, I'll put a plug in for my favorite burgers:
          Slow Club
          Street
          Balboa Cafe
          Zuni
          Chez Maman

I strongly second the above list.
I take out of towners to Zuni for lunch and the burgers are wonderful.

          2. I'd also like to add Zeitgeist for city burgers. The atmosphere isn't to be missed, the burgers are juicy and dripping with love, the bun leaves a bit to be desired...but that burger with a great glass of beer is awesome. Also, Prather Ranch cooks at the Ferry Building on Tuesdays and Saturdays...burgers, dogs, and on saturdays, pancakes!
