Espresso Grounds Sprinkled on Ice Cream?

So what's the name of this dish in Italian! Robert? I can't for the life of me remember anything but "camino" - it's supposed to be like gravel on the road.

It's also fabulously delicious.

This is kind of off-topic but when you sprinkle Nestle's Quik on ice cream, it's called a Dusty Miller. Actually it's pretty good with instant instead of grounds, it melts into the ice cream better.

Has anyone used some type of liquor or alcohol on this as well...seems to me we had this once with Scotch as well as the grounds???

Julia Child mentioned this in one of her 1970's cookbooks, as a suggestion for a simple dessert.

In Julia Child & Co. she says: "....it's fun to pass the goblets of ice cream and let guests help themselves....to the coffee in a bowl with a teaspoon."

She mentions using instant coffee, but remember this was 1970's when whole roasted coffee beans were not widely available nor known.

I like to whack a few beans with my mallet and sprinkle over Double Rainbow Vanilla.

Affogato ("drowned") is a classic Italian dessert consisting of gelato with espresso poured over it. Often, espresso grounds and whipped cream are added on top.

Don't know the Italian name for it but I love ground coffee on ice cream. I typically grind a bit coarser than for espresso because as the coffee grinds freeze up on the ice cream they get real crunchy.

That sounds absolutely amazing. Let us know when you figure out the name!

So do you seriously just sprinkle ground espresso on ice cream -- or do you smash up espresso beans for a chunky coarser deal?

No, it's not big chunks, but not powdery either - just regular ground dark roast coffee.
