Harold and Belle's -- last night

My folks just moved to LA from SF -- but we used to live in New Orleans. Last night was my 3rd time at Harold and Belle's.
My mom said her po' boy at Harold and Belle's was the best po' boy she's had since we left New Orleans over 25 years ago -- then she couldn't stop smiling. Each bite she took she acted like it was her first.
I had the shrimp and crawfish etouffee, rich and smoky, I loved it. My dad had the red beans and rice with sausages. I'm pretty sure the sausages were from Pete's.
Harold and Belle's does seem a little pricey but the quality seems very high.
Best cajun/creole in LA -- definitely.

I love Harold & Belle's! They give you huge servings and everything tastes good. Leave your calorie counters at home, though!
I am a big fan of the shrimp and crawfish etouffee as well, but I haven't had anything there that I didn't like. Very rich food. I know most of the seafood items (the etoufee, the scampi, the fish) runs in the mid 20s and up. The appetizers are usually $10 and up , if I am not mistaken, but they are good ones like a plate of fried oysters. I don't think I have ever spent less than $40 there once I get a drink/appetizer and a meal. And, that is a minimum. But, I have never walked out of there without a to go container either, because the portions are huge. Oh, and I cannot forget that they serve real green goddess dressing! That alone makes me crave going there.
Be aware that it is usually crowded and the service can be slow and spotty. But the food is worth it.
Ughghgggg - I hate that I love the food here - it is as authentic as it is unhealthy - and on top of that the portions are huge (probably a good idea to get individual appetizers and split an entree). The gumbo - etoufee and fish dishes I've had there were all the real deal. I ate there last week and had the fried mixed fish plate (oysters/shrimp/fish) all were lightly dusted and fried to perfection - everything on my plate was golden brown - crisp - succulent - flavorful (the oil was clean) -- so unhealthy but so good. It is pricey and the location is a bit sketchy but worth the splurge and the surge in your cholesterol once a year - use the valet.
