The Great Pizza Debate
My goal is to create a poll of best pizza in Toronto. There are two kinds of pizza styles to be polled, traditional thin crust italian wood oven or similiar style, and the thick crust american/canadian style. Please post only your choice for each, without comments, and I will keep adjusting this posting to show the total counts. Ideally you put the address for any of the non-chain places so others can find.
Thanks!
THE TOTAL VOTES

02- Terroni
Thick Crust-
01- King Slice
01- Massimo's

Thick - Pizza GiGi (Harbord, east of Bathurst)
I grew up on GiGi pizza and still crave it. They do a great Sicilian slice but I'm a traditionalist, preferring straight up and down Pep, mush & GPThin - IL Paesano (Brown's Line/Horner)
Great homemade sauce with cheese baked on top of toppings. -
My vote for favourite thin crust pizza goes to Dino's Wood-Burning Oven Pizza, if only for the crust itself. Don't get me wrong - the toppings are decent, but the crust itself is stellar - it could definitely go head-to-head with any of the top pizzerias in NYC...!

re: redearth
Everyone go to DINO'S!!!Good to see someone else sees the good qualities in Dino's. I feel Dino has the best crust in town hands down. I do put him on the level of NY pizza. God I want some Lombardi's!!! anywayI want to convince him to start using fresh mozza and buffalo mozza, fresh basil, and fresh garlic. The combo would make him the best pizza in town with no argument. And Dino is a super nice guy which is pleasent. I'm worried about the place because it seems a little quiet right now. But once the word gets around about how good this pizza is Im sure it will be busy. Check it out at 820 Queensway.
-
re: mlukan
Right on! I too have been trying to convince him to try some fresh mozza, but he seems unconvinced, considering how expensive it would be. And perhaps he's right. NYC pizzerias go through such massive quantities of fresh mozzarella that they create their own market for its production and subsequent price drop. Here, not so much. Still, it would be nice to get that classic combo of simple san marzano tomato sauce, fresh basil, garlic, and mozz, on a perfectly charred, thin, wood-oven fired pizza crust, in Toronto. It must be possible!

I want to vote for Roma's as well (been going there for about 10 years now, lived in the neighborhood all my life).
As well Bitondo's (College/Clinton) is awesome too!
We should start one for italian steak sandwiches too - forget California's, San Francesco on Clinton (across from Bitondo's) is the best I've ever had.

Well it seems there are some obvious favorites. But thanks for your thoughts, I tried some new places because of this and they were pretty good. There was some debate on whether this format was good or not. I kind of like it. For example there is a best Italian post floating around now. Try and read that and tell me what the majority of Chowhounders feel is the best? Its difficult to tell. Im not saying this place should be full of polls, because it would be boring. But for some foods I think it works. Want to try another? Best Sushi, Best Burgers, Best Italian?

re: HarryLloyd
If we have a thai vote, there should be two categories - one for authentic and one for non-authentic (the ones that have Thai in their name).
For pizza, I'm surprised nobody has voted for the thin crust funghi pizza with truffle oil at Lil Baci.
I would vote for thin crust at Wise Guyz but they seem to have closed down. So I guess my vote goes to Terroni but only the Yonge/St. Clair location. I hate the Queen West location. For thick, I want something gooey and greasy with generous toppings and cheese that stretches when you bite in and a crust you enjoy eating instead of pitching or dipping. Any ideas?

re: Food Tourist
Regarding Dino's - their crust tends to be overcooked/burnt, so overall I'd say they are average despite being generous with toppings. They don't have basil or fresh mozzarella but they do have artichokes and fresh parsley and garlic. I really wanted to like them because of proximity and friendly staff, but it won't be my go-to pizza place. I'll also be checking out the nearby italian places (Thyme 4, Pazzia Osteria, Santa Monica, Mamma Martino's, etc.) for good pizza.
-
re: Food Tourist
Hmmm. Sorry to hear you didn't like it much. I tend to expect some charring on crusts that are done in a woodburning oven though.
I didn't like Thyme 4 the one time I tried it - can't remember if the crust was too thick or if I didn't like the tomato sauce they used. Mamma Martino's food has consistently been on the decline over the past decade, so I'm wary to try them.
Let us know how the others are.

re: TdotFoodKing
the thing is, what the majority of chowhounders think does not necessarily jive with my own personal palate. i respect their favourites but i don't always agree and that is why i value descriptions and comments that go into detail as to why they enjoyed their meals. once i learn who has similar tastes to me, it makes it easier to know if it's a place that i will have great success with.
-
re: pinstripeprincess
I agree. Comments are required in order to understand the whys and wherefores of individual tastes. I need to know when someone is being particularily finicky (and about what) or when they are demanding perfection every single time they visit a casual resto like Terronis. So if one were to really do a meaningful poll on here, it would be nice to judge based on areas such as Food, Service, Atmosphere and Value...along with the necessary comments.
I also agree that polls should last a year at most and then start fresh again perhaps with historical data kept along side.
The other problem with polls with no comments is that it opens it up to cheating. You can always tell the shills with their lavish diatribes of positivity VS the more balanced reviews. As well, it is important to see other postings by the same reviewer to understand their biases, and to see if they in fact have posted for any other resto.
-
re: deelicious
Yes I agree that asking for no comments was not a good idea in this poll. I think if its done in a way, that you vote first, then if you choose to add comments you can and should. Its easy to see the choice and add it up if done that way. But if you want to see why the person chose it you can read on. It should be an all around vote based on the total experience.

re: TdotFoodKing
The problem with best sushi is that you'd have to separate into price categories otherwise everyone would vote for Sushi on Bloor or some such nonsense.
For $37 plus tax you can get the best sushi at Kumai in Mississauga. For $80, you can get the best sushi at Kaji. You see the problem.

I find it hit and miss. When I first had it I thought it was the best. Then after a few overcooked deliveries, I lost interest. Maybe eating it there is better, which Ive never done. For take-out I was going between King Slice and Vesuvio's for awhile. Now I jump between Roma and King Slice.

It would be great if Chowhound had an option where you could save lists like this for a certain type of food in a city...polls that would always be open for voting and I think it would be a helpful resource for someone looking for a quick recommendation and not wanting to search through masses of old threads.
Anyway, on topic, I'll vote Terroni's for thin and don't really have a vote for thick.

re: HarryLloyd
Yes, quality changing is a problem. If you asked me for best pizza 2 years ago I would say Il Gatto Nero on College. It used to be a dump, one of the bars where only older Italian gents would hang out. But the food and coffee was unbelievable. Now, sadly they moved, updated, renovated, and draw a younger crowd. (well my age) but last time I went I was so disappointed. Maybe they got too busy for their own good.

Curious reaction from the polltaker. I could say much the same about other nominations (some of which arrived at our house with their grease seeping out the soggy bottom) but didn't out of respect for personal tastes. Italian sausage + artichoke pizza from Regina = heaven! :-)

Thick Crust - Venice Pizza. 2636 St Clair Av E, East York (416) 751-6666
Thin Crust - Piccolo in CabbagetownMy $0.02 - The quality of pizza has gone downhill in this city ever since the introduction of Pizza Pizza. It has to be be cheap enough, fast enough, and trendy enough to compete. Pizza was much better 30 years ago when it was made by mainly family run operations or the solo, genuinely Italian, artist.

re: embee
Well that's just great..... I read this thread and wanted a pizza. Only to find all the debit machines are down..... sigh..... no cash on hand.... lol
You know what?
Mama's is not all that bad really, when I am lazy and want delivery, that's where I go.
However, I had two good experiences with Panago recently. -
-
re: TdotFoodKing
Sad, isn't it.
I don't have much experience with the Terroni on Queen W. I find the one on Yonge an over hyped, over priced, attitude laden place serving good ingredients turned into blah pizzas.
Note the "plain cheese" at Mamma's and the "occasional good day" at Massimo's references.
Maybe my pizza palate is stuck in different cities and eras - New Haven and Brooklyn a long time ago.
-
re: embee
Ya maybe give the Queen st. location a try. I find the staff really pleasant and laid back, probably due to the neighborhood. You mention Brooklyn which reminds me of Mario Battali's places. Otto in NYC is by far the best Ive ever had, even better than Italy. Too me Terroni comes close to that. I find Mamma's to be very fake tasting, or sort of processed.
-
re: TdotFoodKing
Interesting how palates perceive things so differently. To me, Mamma's seems to use fresh and high quality ingredients in their pizzas. I admit my standards for evaluating chain food are more relaxed than my standards for evaluating "artisinal with attitude". But, relative to the Yonge Terroni location, Mamma's also tastes better. I keep harping "plain cheese" because the toppings used at Mamma's, though also apparently high quality, are bland and mess up the crust.
My standards were set by Frank Pepe's and Sally's in New Haven and Totonno's in Brooklyn. Whether significant or not, all use coal burning ovens. Totonno's even made their own cheese. I haven't been to any of these places in a long time. They all still exist. I've no idea whether they remain great.
I pass both Columbo's and Danforth at least twice a day. I really wanted to love both. The people at Columbo's are great and Danforth evokes nostalga. Neither serves what I'd call bad pizza, but neither justifies a special journey.
-
re: embee
Yes Totonno's still exists and is still great. Many chowhounders still love it. I always find Mamma's to be soggy or too soft. But at the same time its been a while, so deserves another chance. Try the San Giorgio at Teronni on Q., if you like proscuitto. It tastes like they use Proscuitto di Parma which is very rare, as most places uses cheaper quality proscuitto's. Give King Slice a try, for thick crust, be interesting to know your thoughts. King Slice - 1598 Bloor Street West, between Keele and Dundas on Bloor.

re: piccola
Well if you decide to give Terroni a try, I think most agree the Queen West location is the better one. If you go after 7:30 its usually a bit of a wait. I like to sit at the bar anyway, as it feels like a real Roman trat. or like some of the great places in NYC you may be used to.

re: Food Tourist
Hi Food Tourist, it's an old school pizza joint where they make your pizza to order. The crust is chewy, slightly doughy and toppings are generous. The cheese is on top (as opposed to under the toppings) so it gets baked nice and brown (my preference). They serve it piping hot from the oven on one of those raised pizza plates (sorry, don't know what they're called). They do have a takeout counter on the other side of the dining room. I've never ordered it to go since I prefer the dining room. It's definitely not gourmet, just yummy comfort food.
