Looking for Potato Salad (San Diego)

This may be an odd posting, but I'm hoping someone can help me. About 5 years ago I had the best potato salad I've ever had from a deli in the La Jolla area of San Diego. I can't remember the name of the deli for the life of me. The potato salad wasn't the usual mayonnaise-y kind. It was red skinned and had a bit of a kick to it. Maybe cayenne pepper? The deli was in a complex across from an investment firm. I know, I know that doesn't narrow it down since we're talking about La Jolla. I remember that the deli had a web site and did some catering. They also had a great fruit salad with mint. Anyway, I am hoping that someone who reads this will know which deli I'm talking about. I just moved back to San Diego after living in San Antonio for 3 years and I'd really love to eat this potato salad again. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

  1. Are we talking about La Jolla proper, or La Jolla - UTC (which is where most the banking and investment firms are located)? Any other details that you remember?

Sadly, many delis come and go, so this place may be gone as well.

I vaguely remember that Donovan's was off to the right as I drove to the deli. I don't think the turn off for the street the deli was on was too far after that. Sorry that I don't remember more.

        Could it be Brothers Deli?

The location sounds right and they have Potato Salad, can't say that I have had it, next time I'm out for lunch I will give it a try. For office park style deli, I have been pleased with Executive Deli, next to the reflecting pool on Executive and Town Center.

        Cheers,

I think you probably got it, stevuchan, given his directions. The Continental European Deli (or whatever they call it) on Regents came to mind as well, though I didn't think they catered - but I could see them having a unique potato salad (albeit with an Eastern European theme).

Just a picky point, USD One - most people call "La Jolla" the area near the Cove, Prospect Avenue, etc. The area to which you are referring is "La Jolla / UTC", though most of the places have San Diego zip codes (except for the banks and hotels). "North University City" would be a more informative geographical term, consistent with the predominant zip code, but though nobody calls it that. :)

Or were you possibly thinking of East Coast Deli? They were in an office building on Executive Drive right across from the Wells Fargo building, the one with (former) Tutto Mari (curently Venice). They up and disappeared about 6 months ago, but IMO were the best deli around this are. Boars Head meats, interesting combinations, good prepared salads.
