Hi all,

I know there have been numerous posts about fidi lunch spots, but most of them seem to be around the embarcadero area, which is a bit of a hike for where i'm at. Anyone have great takeout suggestions for within a short walk from 2nd between Market and Mission?

Thank you!!!!

It's slim pickin's around here for lunch. Soup Freaks has good takeout -- fresh salads and really good soups (the Hungarian lecso is a favorite). If I don't bring my own, I usually end up either there or Harvest and Rowe, another salad bar place. Cross Market up to Crocker Galleria and you'll find a big food court -- that's where Medicine is. Noodles and bento bowls, but not your standard Japanese takeout. There have been lots of reports on it on the boards.

Tried this last week, the cobb salad was okay but it was pretty much just bacon bits on it and I was really hoping for more bacon. Other than that it was a decent salad, nothing life-changing. I'm intrigued by the crab roll though and might go back for that.

I left my job in that area two years ago, but when I worked nearby I really liked the Taiwanese food at Tea Garden, especially the pork-belly stuffed bread. Mission between 1st and 2nd. Any recent opinions?

Also, Cafe Madeleine on New Montgomery has good salads and sandwiches.

That's not the right place link. There's something wrong with the place link function -- when I tried to choose the correct link, the application kept returning the location you linked to as well. Odd.

The correct address is 515 Mission Street, between 1st and 2nd, on the side of the street farther from Market.

Update: I went in there, and waited in line -- the menu sounded great. There were lots of people waiting for food and two women grumbling that they had been waiting 45 minutes for takeout. Anyone know if that's normal?

So I'll try it another time, when I have more time to wait.

Wait times are completely erratic--basically, they don't have any real system for taking orders, so if a lot of people show up, there's chaos.

You can call ahead. And I've never had a problem going early. Just check your order before you leave--that's how I ended up trying their won ton soup (which I love), after I got it by accident.

It is what my friend M used to call a "soupy" day--perfect for Tea Garden.

I think it was Windy(?) who wrote some really extensive reports in the past on lunch places in the Financial District. I can't find them after a short search.

My favorite thing at Tea Garden is the won ton soup. Almost enough to get me on BART to go downtown for lunch. The intense beef noodle is great too.

This is soooo funny! I walked out the door for lunch today, feeling bored with all my usual spots, remembered all the chatter about Tea Garden when it first opened and decided to try it. When I got back (beef noodle soup in hand), I decided to check to see if there were any more recent comments, and there were comments from yesterday!

Anyway, thumbs up on the beef soup. Any other must-orders? And has anyone tried the gyros or falafel from Sausalito Espresso a couple of doors down?

There is a mini mart/deli on Sutter at Montgomery across the street from Loehmann's thatis tucked between Loehmann's shoes and a 711. Sorry I don't remember the name though I have been going there for years. They make the best egg salad sandwich in the city. If you are a egg salad fan this is the place.

Toaster Oven (on Second, between Mission and Howard) has pretty good sandwiches. They toast their sandwiches (far superior to Quizno's). They're also far superior to Subway's. And it's surprisingly cheap--about $7 for a sandwich, cookie, and drink (far less than Seller's Market, and I thought it was better). I had been walking by there everyday for the last six months and just discovered it today.
