This was in the AZ Republic today. Interesting read about Sherrif Joe somehow saving us from contaminated food by shutting down cart vendors.

according to the article, thats not what's happening. he's targeting vendors because of their suspected immigration status and outside of the purview of environmental services, the health inspectors. they areusing it as a club to target perceived illegal immigration, and they deported someone with proper health dept papers.

do these scenarios indicate a desire to help and/or regulate street vending? doesn't appear that way. thoughts of immigration policies aside for a moment, this just comes across like duplicitous tactics. part of a plan to ensure safe street vendors? no.

The sheriff can't arrest people who aren't breaking the law. Whether the cart vendors don't have proper green cards or health department permits, the law is the law. There are plenty of law-abiding venues for a Mexican food fix.

would that sheriff joe help our woefully understaffed enviornmental services dept inspect restaurants to ensure complicity with health codes we'd all feel safer. that he's using the guise of public health to enforce immigration issues speaks more of politicking than concern for public health. thats how this is chow-related and not an immigration discussion ;)

Somehow I think that the food from these street vendors is probably a lot more wholesome than what is served in the county jails. I don't think any of these vendors are serving green bologna with their elote.
