Upcoming New Main Page

Greg B Oct 7, 2007 03:39 PM

Jacquilynne mentioned in one of the threads about the new main page that the current version with the big box o' boards filling up the screen is a temporary fix to the problem created by removing the board "cloud" from the right side of the screen. So, given that the techs are apparently working on yet another main page, I thought a thread where we could provide our input BEFORE the new page suddenly appears would be a refreshing change.

I personally don't care for the box o' boards filling up the entire screen upon my arrival. I liked the old listing of most recent posts. I never used the cloud either, having figured out the drop-down board list early on. In fact, the whole top right of the screen always seemed fairly useless to me, with an ad box promoting Chowhound (huh? I'm already here!) and now the video box, which I am almost sure I will never use.

So, what I would do is keep the top-level menus and drop-downs, ditch the ad box or move it and the video box down below the fold, and give us a list of boards on the top right that isn't cloud-like but rather a straightforward, organized list.

What do others think?

I concur that what I would like to see is most recent posts. That definitely inspires me to check out more boards and stay on the site longer.
With the format now, I only stick to my "go-to" boards, and I'm on and off in a few minutes.

Why not just bookmark http://www.chowhound.com/new_posts/show ?

Not having relied on the older (broken?) feature, I like the 'cloud' of boards on the main Boards page - it is simple to find and use.

I'm opposed to relying on key drop down menus hidden by 'trick' features aka the clickable triangles; the latter should be replaced a more common technique like 'mouse over' menus.

The lists of 'recent' posts are *pointless*. I rarely read the boards outside of California so I'm not interested in their recent posts at all. Just Go To the board you want!

Limit the 'recent' posts lists to the Topical and Site Specific boards since they have worldwide appeal.
