$5 or under lunch?
We travel extensively and one thing that we love to do is try and find lunch for under $5 a person. We do not want a food court, but don't mind hotdog carts, etc.
We will be in Boston next weekend and will be looking for lunch on Saturday.
It is always fun to see what we can come up with, my husband had his first falafel sandwich in Chicago a few years ago because it was only $4.00.
Any fun ideas?

Try the wonton soup noodles at HK Eatery or the pupuserias and tacquerias of East Boston (see http://www.chowhound.com/topics/448448).

Burrito Express downtown on Bedford St will also fit your budget; very good tacos for $2-3. Not sure if they're opn on weekends..can't find a ph # and no sign when I biked by today...but a great little spot...sort of between Macy's and Chinatown.
I can update on Tues..menu is in offfice.

Depending where you are, sandwiches may be your most likely bet. If you'll be downtown, the Chilean-style sandwiches at Chacarero fit the budget, are quite tasty (esp if you get extra hot sauce!) and not something one sees a lot on street corners of other cities. (Note that they've lost their ultra-convenient downtown crossing location, but have one @ 20 province st). Chinatown for banh mi is also a good suggestion-- Mei Sum is usually my favorite (on Beech St) and quite cheap, though recently I've had a couple disappointments in the freshness of the bread.

Burrito's at Boca Grande are less than $5, the Lower Depths in Kenmore Square has good hotdogs for $1 plus a bunch a great beers, sushi at Shino on Newbury is $1/piece, a cup of clam chowder is less than $5 at most places (Legal's and Jacob Wirth's and good). Enjoy your visit.

It's not a challenge unless you're looking for sit down meals.
Ernesto's on Salem Street in the North End has 1/4 of a pizza slices for varying prices but all around $3. It's good.
Galleria Umberto on Hanover in the N.End. Calzones are maybe $2.50. The arancini is fantastic and the size of a softball for about $3. The pan pizza slices are like $1.10. This, along with Haymarket Pizza, are very local choices. A slice of cheese pizza at Haymarket is $1 and is 1/6 of a pizza - and it's in the middle of the Haymarket activity. Ask them to heat it.
There is also a good falafel place a few doors down from Haymarket Pizza - it's under one of the meat markets.
Otherwise, as noted, banh mi and maybe you can even find a bowl of pho for $5 (though you'd have to sit and tip, etc.).
Al's on State Street. All small subs, hot or cold, are $4.50. The chicken ones are not that great but the rest are good and they have better bread than most places.

shame on me for missing Galleria Umberto's..:) It's also 1 of my favorites. Also try the panzarotti. A deep fried mashed potato cake..with a mozzarella stuffing.
GU lost on a coin flip yesterday for M&M..great BBQ in Roxbury..will slightly push the budget. GU is closed Monday for the holiday so I'll have to wait for my fix..:)

A bahn mi sandwich in Chinatown would fit your budget..$2-2.50. Board faves in downtown include Mei Sun?? and Saigon Sandwich. A short T ride (red line) takes you to Dorchester and expands your options.
1 of my favorite cheapo Sat lunches is a 2 part meal. Go to Haymarket. The clam guy(non Fanieul Hall end of the market) shucks fresh clams..3 for $2. This weekend, his Mexican shucker made a fresh pico de gallo and salsa as a condiment which was a nice surprise and I hope they continue it...Then wander over to Haymarket Pizza for a slice of whatever looks best. Of course, you could get 6 clams and go slightly over budget....:)
