448326 Sat Oct 06 11:10:12 -0700 2007 1 61 Austin 0 3010623 After the North American continent slowly shifted back into place last night [cast briefly adrift from the fire of the Sonic Youth at the Stubbs] food was moved back to the front of the agenda,hustling right past the Hornitos and Crown I heard the Hoeks Pizza lads had managed to get their joint back up and running [after a several month hiatus] and had landed in the upstairs lounge at Headhunter's [sw corner of 8th and RedRiver] so we made our way to this hidden food counter....through the bottom bar....up the stairs to the middle bar....then up more stairs to the punkrock treehouse with a pizza kitchen tucked away in the corner. This is some of the best pizza in Austin. Which may or not may be like being the best ballerina in Galveston[who was it said that anyway?] Hot-Greasy-Cheesy-Salty and with a nice application of crushed red pepper-Spicy The sweet serenade of Skeletal Earth was absent [they weren't ripping death metal out of their speakers] which as you probably know was their signature on 6th St before they got booted out by the Alamo...but they haven't skipped a beat on their hand thrown pies. I always get the same nice plain slice:Pepperoni and Cheese.The pepperoni is thin and cooked til the ring forms into a crispy little pork disk.The cheese is plentiful and molten.The sauce is very sparing....just enough to paint the nicely charred crust. Hoeks is open late[ til around 2:15 in the morning ] and they are now delivering to the downtown area. Austin dodged a bullet on this one.We've seen enough of our old school food havens disappear over the last few years.After a night of carousing downtown drop in and see if the slice is the way you remember it.
