Need reccos for Tarpon Springs - Greek & otherwise

My husband and I will be visiting Tarpon Springs in a couple of weeks. We've been there before but want to try different places. We love good Greek and gyros. But we also want to know if there are really good and unique places that aren't Greek that we should try. We'll be there over a long weekend so will have plenty of opportunities to eat!

I like Hellas. You can sit outside and watch the crowds go by. Also Paul's Shrimp house is good. They have really good shrimp and excellent grilled octopus. I think Rusty Bellies is expensive and overated. I have been there twice and had mediocre meals at best. Plus the service was not good at all. Our waitress brought our food and was never to be seen again. I finally got the attention of the hostess to get our waitress to bring us more tea. She acted like she was doing us a big favor.

All I can say is all of my experiences at Rusty Bellies have been good ones. And I was fine with the pricing. But what do I know.

Also like Hella's. Had the best red snapper there OF MY LIFE. Can't even make it that good myself. Everything there is off-the-boat fresh.

I soooo agree with Trail 6 that Mykonos has the best Greek food on the sponge docks (and probably in Tampa Bay). I must say, however, that our one trip to Rusty Bellies was very disappointing. The fried shrimp lacked flavor, some of the shrimps weren't even deveined, and they were overcooked and dry. Plus the service was sorely lacking. Maybe they were having an off day, but next time I spend my fat calories on fried seafood it won't be at Rusty Bellies.

I have had one good trip to Rusty Bellies and one disappointing trip. IMO their steamer bucket is a sad waste of money. We have always had pleasant service though.
My favorite in Tarpon Springs is Costa's. Definitely try the grilled octopus. It gives lobster a run for it's money.

For other than Greek cuisine, there is an excellent seafood restaurant at the end of the sponge docks called Rusty Bellies. Whenever I am up that way, I live in St. Pete, I always stop by RB. The seafood tastes like it just came out of the gulf. And their sides are also excellent.

Mykonos is easily the best. My wife and I met in Greece; we were stationed there for two years. The soul of Greek cuisine is in the Mezetas- the appetizers. Order them like Tapas. Have them served at intervals. Mykonos has double the variety of Mezetas. Enjoy! The grilled octopus is great.
