Meat market in Sonoma County

I will be visiting friends in Healdsburg and we want to grill steaks one night and have great California Cabernet. I could order something from Niman Ranch but would prefer to buy something local. Is there a good meat market in the area? We would be willing to go as far south as Santa Rosa but not much further. We are looking for some prime, dry aged (not sure of the terms) steaks.

Thanks for the help!

  1. Out west of Santa Rosa, on Guerneville Road near to Willowside Road there is a butcher there that has great product. I believe it is called Willowside Meats. In Healdsburg near the intersection of Dry Creek Road and Healdsburg Avenue is Big Johns Market. They have lots of great items and do quite a bit of their own butchering.

Big John's is very service oriented and probably can order anything you'd ask for. Took a closer look at the beef selection this weekend and didn't see any prime in the case.

Stopped by Willowside on Saturday to pick up some smoked pork jowls. The beef in the case looks great and is cut to order to the thickness you want. "Prime grade" prime rib is available, per a sign on the counter, so could be cut into rib steaks, I guess. IIRC, it was around $15/lb, maybe less. The other things on display are choice grade, all dry aged, and prices looked quite reasonable to me for regular and grassfed.

When I went to Tierra's stand I also swung by Martindale's, not having stopped there for some time. Forgot to ask about availability of prime. Sign in front promotes choice grade. I saw some good-looking and very meaty English cut short ribs for $3.99/lb that I'd love to smoke low and slow.

I was back at Willowside to do some sausage shopping today. The prime grade prime rib is $13/lb, not $15.

Asked at Big John's and no prime, all choice grade.

I usually go to the butcher shop inside the Sonoma Market. It's a full-service style shop and the butchers know how to really cut meat rather than just take it out of a box and slice it into pieces. Good quality I have found. Prime as well as choice. Organic meats and poulty.

      3. Not 100% sure about meeting all your criteria, but Martindale's (5280 Aero Drive) just off Hwy 101 between Santa Rosa and Healdsburg has never disappointed me.

Martindale's makes its own sausage, ham and bacon. Have you tried them? Any specific recommendations?

        2. I've heard good things about Willowside Meats too, havent eaten meat from them yet though as they are a little far from me

          1. Ha ha... I wasn't certain if this thread was going to be literal or if it was about picking up singles in Sonoma...

If you're in the Point Reyes neighborhood, check out Sun Marin just outside downtown Pt. Reyes Station. Premium meats featured in many prominent restaurants. I like the cowboy cut bone in ribeye.

            2. Any findings to report back?
