where to eat in Pittsburgh (possibly near Mexican War Streets area)?
I'll be in Pitty for work Monday through Wednesday and wondering what some of your favorite spots are, perhaps most specifically in the Mexican War Streets area? (or easy access to/from that area?). I am a fan of public transit so while I will have a rental car, at the end of the workday I get tired of driving and would love to walk/take a bus....
thanks for any tips!

Check out this interactive map. It's kinda fun.

I notice that blue socks is really a blue stocking. You may want to re-think wondering around in that area. You may rather grab a cab to downtown or even the South Side (Carson Street)›3 Replies-

re: Rick
Rick,
Everything I've had from the Priory Inn bakery has been consumed at Intermezzo (21st St) - have not been to the actual bakery. But I'd recommend the turnovers and napoleons. The do have their own site: http://www.prioryfinepastries.com/ and it's not actually at the Inn as I inferred, but three blocks away on E. Ohio. I just always seem to call it the "Priory Inn" bakery because it's the same people.

FYI, BYOB in Pennsylvania means hit a state store, not a drug store, convenience store or super market. The rec for Penn Brewery was good. The beer is good and they do Bierhall food. Also of the German persuasion is Max's Allegheny tavern. Or you can just walk across the Roberto Clemente bridge to downtown. Lots of eateries right after you get off the bridge.
By the way - "Pitty"?? Really?

I would recommend Sassy Marie's on James Street, or Muriel's on Western Ave. Both are in the central North Side/Mexican War Streets area. New Moon Fusion on General Robinson is also good. Sadly, Acanthus has closed; Legends of the North Shore is a good recommendation but remember to BYOB (same with Muriel's).

Only place I've eaten recently in North Side is Legends, which is byo and not bad - but don't expect much in way of ambience, it's sort of converted diner-esque meets mom's living room-ish. Beleza is a decent coffeehouse corner or Buena Vista and Simpsonia.
I've heard good things about Acanthus (sp?) and Penn Brewery, but haven't been to either. The Priory Inn has an exceptional bakery.
If you're not in the mood for adventure, the mainstream food is near PNC Park (Hyde Park steakhouse, Atrias, Outback, Jerome Bettis 36 Grill, etc.)
