LA Chowhound in SF for one night...

Where on earth should I go for dinner on a Saturday night?

Requirements:

In the city, preferably not too far from Union Square
Fantastic food (Italian, French, American, fusion - Not traditional chinese or japanese)
Expensive is fine, although maybe not Gary Danko expensive
Great atmosphere - hip and trendy is fine, doesn't need to be overly quiet and romantic
Definitely a special occasion place - I'm only there for one night so I want to splurge!

Thanks in advance to my fellow Chowhounds!

Go to Delfina. It has everything you are asking for and you won't blow your paycheck. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Then after you go there, plan your next trip as you are about to get hit with several more suggestions.

I love Delfina, but I wouldn't consider it a splurge night. And it's not all that convenient to Union Square.

I agree with Delfina, and would also add the following:

      - Coi
      - Ame
      - Myth
      - Bar Tartine

Bar Tartine doesn't seem as much of a special-occasion splurge as the others.

I'd suggest Ame or Myth in that order.
