Where can I find the best rendition of this delectable item for my friend's surprise birthday party?

I am willing to travel anywhere from SF up to Mountain View.

Cheers !

  1. Apologies.

It appears that there are three clear contenders:

    1. Just Desserts
    2. Delessio on Market
    3. Citizen Cake on Grove

Which would fellow 'hounds recommend ?

Arizmendi on 9th Ave makes a dark chocolate cake with fudge icing, and it is delicious. They sell it by the slice, but I bet you could buya whole cake if you order ahead.

    2. I second Arizmendi's chocolate cake. It's delish. I just served a chocolate raspberry cake from Delessio's at a b-day dinner and although it was beautiful, it tasted like absolutely nothing and was a bit try. A total disappointment.

I don't know what osho means by "fudge topping," but I absolutely third the rec of Arizmendi's chocolate cake with chocolate frosting as the best I've had in SF. I think a whole cake is around $24. So delicious.

I like a lot of what Delessio makes, but their big cakes, not so much. One of their chocolate cakes is almost all ganache, which I think is kind of gross.

      2. You can't go wrong with the Arizmendi chocolate cake. I always loved Just Desserts Chocolate Cake, but this is even better. Buy a slice and try it before odering...you won't be dissappointed.

        1. Again, not sure what you mean by "fudge" topping, but Kara's Cupcakes has a couple chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting that might suit your needs -- the fleur de sel or the sweet chocolate especially. Also, seconding the Citizen Cake suggestion.

          1. There's also Crossroads Cafe's (Delancey Street @ the Embarcadero) amazing chocolate cake. since they are not a bakery per se, they do not have bakery boxes to give it to you in so they give you a plate which you can return later. You do need to order it 1-2 days ahead of time. It is soooo yummy and the perfect chocolate cake.
The problem with the Just Desserts one these days is that you don't know how fresh they are since the only actual JD outlets left are at the airport or at the Metreon. You can buy their cakes at certain grocery stores or Costco (I think) but freshness is a problem.
