Baking with frozen blueberries: Defrost first or not?

I'd like to bake a cake this morning and have a bag of frozen blueberries. Do I need to defrost them first, or is it better if I don't? Thanks for any advice.

  1. Far better if you don't defrost - defrosted they will seep juice throughout your batter and turn the whole thing blueberry-colored. I always toss them (frozen) with a couple of tablespoons of flour, which purportedly helps to keep them from sinking to the bottom of the cake.

        I don't defrost either. I also find that adding them as the last ingredient and folding in gently keeps them intact with minimal "bleeding".
