Restaurants near the Prince Conti hotel

I will be staying at the Prince Conti hotel and need a recommendation for dinner that is walking distance. Going for a wedding and need a place to eat for Friday night. Moderate $ but good food as it will be a group of my wife's family not a bunch of Chowhounds. Thanks

  1. You might want to provide a bit more information. The Prince Conti, www.princecontihotel.com is located at 830 Conti St, (504) 529-7142, and is in the heart of the French Quarter. There are maybe 60 good restaurants within walking distance from the hotel, and maybe 10 great ones. You need to define "Moderate $," as that could be $250/person without wine, for someone from London, NYC or San Francisco. For a diner from rural Kentucky, it could mean $20/person including soda. Also, give the board an idea of the type(s) of food that you'd like. The spectrum is very broad. One is likely to find most, with the exception of esoteric ethnic, within the environs of the FQ.

For "family" (without a bunch of CHs), I think that the Palace Cafe might work, and it's right at the edge of the FQ, on Canal St. www.palacecafe.com at 605 Canal St, (504) 523-1661. Check this board for recs. on it. Remember, this is but one of very many.

I would avoid Palace Cafe. We were there in August and food and service have severely slipped. We have crossed them off of our "must eat" places for the future.

My FIL will want to pick up the check and there will be about 10 of us so I thought that entree prices in the mid to upper teens to low/mid twenties would be about right. There are a lot of great restaurants I would love to try but I'll have to do it when it's just the wife and me.

The fact that there will be 10 or so of you affects the analysis. For a group of that size, I've had good luck at Mr. B's, Palace Cafe, and GW Fins. Pelican Club also is an option. All are on the higher side of "moderate." There are lots of more moderately priced places in the Quarter that comfortably can handle a group of that size, but you might take a big hit in quality.

      2. You'll be about a block and a half from Felix's Oyster Bar. While it has oysters in its name the menu is pretty eclectic. Acme Oyster bar is another half-block or so.
