Site layout is blocking site text & rollovers

This is a description of two issues, both connected to something I would describe as site layout. They are both happening with IE 6.0.

First, when I open a thread in a new window, parts of the thread do not always display. Instead, one of the reddish-brown panes that is sized to hold all the links & stuff at the bottom of the screen is floating over the thread. There is no text or anything in the pane. It does not disappear by clicking on it. The only way to make it disappear is to refresh the screen, which means that all the posts display full text and none of the posts that were viewed already are collapsed anymore. That is regrettable, since this happens most consistently with long threads. The situation does not occur if I just click on a thread to open it; it is particular to right-clicking on a thread to open it in a separate window.

Second, when I roll my cursor over a person's avatar, the box that contains the user's name & a larger thumbnail of their picture no longer displays on top. I'd say that it does not display at all, except that if the avatar is close enough to the right margin of the screen you can see the right-most edge of the box peek out from behind all the other panes. This occurs the Who's Talking pane as well as the People Reading Me pane.

Thanks.

  1. Hey, KTFoley,

Re: the blocking problem. I was the first one to report about on the Tech Help board back on Sept. 10th.

    http://www.chowhound.com/topics/422047

I finally got a response from Jacquilynne several weeks later on this thread -- http://www.chowhound.com/topics/417589 - and at her request, I've e-mailed her several screen shots of the problem. I haven't heard back from her since and, so far, no change.

It would be great if the Techs could solve the problem because it's a *major* annoyance!!

Sorry, RGR, I've sent your screenshots along to Engineering, but I don't have any other updates for you.

      1. re: Jacquilynne

Jacquilynne, I do appreciate knowing that you received them and have passed them along to Engineering. On my part, I owe you a "Thank you" for helping me to acquire a new computer skill. :-)

Jacquilynne, would it help to know that I find the blocking problem is most prevalent when I move quickly between the panes? If I right-click to open in another window and then make myself slow down before going back to the first window to open another thread, the problem occurs less often.

This is an explanation rather than a solution because changing behavior would require lessening the coffee intake. Not gonna happen.

          1. re: KTFoley

It always helps to have more information about a problem, for sure! I wonder if it's a case where the pages aren't loading completely and that's where the errors occur.

            1. re: Jacquilynne

But that wouldn't account for the instances when the entire page loads, but the big red block is in the middle, i.e., complete posts above, some blocked posts, and complete posts below.

              1. re: RGR

RGR, thank you for that clarification -- that is precisely what I am trying to descibe!

      2. re: RGR

RGR, it's always good to know that I'm not the only one with the issue. Thanks for the feedback; that lessens the likelihood that the root cause is incompetence ... or imagination.

      3. Just wanted to add that the can't-see-avatar problem is happening to me too. On the "who's talking" area, I can no longer roll my cursor over the avatars and see a larger version of the picture and the person's screenname.

It's been that way for me for months. I thought they had removed that feature.

I have the red blocking problem also. MSIE 6.0 with all the latest updates.

And I noticed an old problem that I thought had gone away. When I edited this message and clicked Save, the 'Saving...' message stayed on screen instead of the revised post displaying, until I hit Refresh. This does not happen every time.

Can we maybe get the developers to use the same uncool browser as their users?

          1. re: meatme

That "Saving" problem has never gone away for me. Every so often, it works correctly, but most of the time, after I click "Save," the edited text does not come back on its own.

          2. re: LNG212

LNG212, would you try this experiment? Go to a thread where there are at least twelve participants. In the Who's Talking area, there should be a full row of avatars. Make sure the window is as larger as it can possibly be, and roll your cursor over the right-most avatar.

In the farthest right margin, behind the red text blocks, can you see the right edge of the avatar's larger picture? It might be just a retangle, not wide enough to even see a piece of the picture itself.

That's what I get, which hints to me that the object is displaying but it's layered behind other blocks. I'm not technical enough to know, but it seems like that object should have some sort of an "always on top" setting.

            1. re: KTFoley

Yes! Wow -- I hadn't noticed that before at all. I just went to one that had a full row of avatars. I don't see anything when I am on the avatars to the left. But when I get to the last few on the farthest right, you are correct -- I see a sliver of a "frame" that it seems like the avatars are appearing but are blocked by everything else (ads) on the right side of the page.

              1. re: LNG212

That's been a problem for awhile -- it's a layering issue. Engineering is aware, but they need to find some time to fix it.

          3. I am also experiencing the blocking issue in IE 6.0.
